Privateers fall to Warriors

Akwesasne Warriors' center Darick St. Marie notched a hat trick and defenseman Carter Trevasani tallied four assists as the Warriors defended home ice and first place, defeating the 1000 Islands Privateers 8-5 tonight at the Anowarako:wa Arena. 398 came out for the battle between the top two teams in the Federal Hockey League and were treated to an offensive spectacle.

Ste. Marie opened the scoring in the game but James Kirkwood answered for 1000 Islands 27 seconds later. Tyler Fernandez and Ryan Pearson got the assists. Ste. Marie tallied with four seconds to go in the first on a shorthanded breakaway that swung the game's momentum. Akwesasne led 4-1 on goals by Kyle Lagace and Josh Desmarais on the power play early in the second period. Ryan Pearson brought down the lead off feeds from Fernandez and Goupil. Fernandez made the game 4-3 from Goupil and Nikita Poliakov. Travis Stacey's power play tally and Martin Beaulne's late goal gave Akwesasne the three-goal end to close the second period. Ste. Marie finished the hat trick 39 seconds into the third. Alex Goupil netted his league-leading 35th goal as Michael Byrd and Adam McAllister earned the helpers. Addison Pelkey scored Akwesasne's eighth goal in a crease scrum, while Justin Levac closed the score sheet with assists going to Pearson and McAllister. Newest Privateer Chase Tippin fought, challenging Joshua Desmarais.

The win gave Akwesasne a seven-point lead over 1000 Islands as the teams head to the Bonnie Castle Rec Center tomorrow at 3 PM.
