Pride Undergo Name Change

May 5, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release

FLORENCE, SC – The Pee Dee Pride today announced at an afternoon press conference that the team is changing its name, effective immediately. From this point forward, the team will now be known as the Florence Pride.

Since moving to Florence from Knoxville, Tennessee prior to the 1997-98 season, the team has been known as the Pee Dee Pride, taking its name from the six-county region in northeastern South Carolina.

"This name change is something that we have put a lot of thought in to. It is not a rush decision," Pride Governor Fred DuBard said. "With the East Coast Hockey League expanding for the upcoming season to include teams on the west coast, this league is now national, and exposure is certainly going to increase. The national scope of the league will certainly help to put Florence, South Carolina on the map."

The Pride have advanced to the Kelly Cup Playoffs in each of its six years in existence. During four of those campaigns, the Pride have advanced to at least the second round. Since the start of the 1997-98 season, the team's first in Florence, the Pride have won 251 games, third most in the league over that span. Only Louisiana (270) and Peoria (262) have won more often.

As a result of the name change, the Pride now have a new home on the World Wide Web. The new web-site is www.florencepride.com.

Season tickets for the 2003-2004 season are now available. For more information, or to place your order, stop by the Pride office, located in the Florence Civic Center, or call (843) 669-7825.
