American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(Nashua, NH) - The Nashua Pride were stunned by the Bridgeport Bluefish, 4-3 this afternoon in front of 2,817 fans at Historic Holman Stadium.
For most of the day, it looked like the Pride's game. Nashua opened the scoring in the first. OF Tim Garland led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout by David Francia and scored on a sac fly by Melvin Nieves.
The Pride tripled their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back two-out singles by DJ Boston and Joe Kilburg in the sixth plated Nieves and Glenn Murray, who had reached base on a walk and a single respectively. >From there, it seemed the Pride would cruise to victory.
But then came the ninth inning. After starter Brian Looney and reliever John Roper combined for eight shutout innings, giving up just four hits, closer Tommy Taylor was unable to shut the door. INF's Jose Amado and Willis Otanez started the frame with back-to-back singles, both scoring the first 'Fish runs of the game on a double by the next batter, OF Tony Mota. After a walk to OF Will Pennyfeather, both Mota and Pennyfeather were moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Rodney Lindsay. A groundout by Cesar Devarez tied the score, followed by the game winning hit, a single by Angel Espada that drove in Pennyfeather. Rusty Meacham came on for the Pride to retire Rolo Avila to end the inning, but the damage had been done. The Pride were unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth, giving Bridgeport a win in a game they had no business being in. Taylor (6-5) took the loss for Nashua, while Bridgeport's Javier Martinez (4-0) got the win in relief. Mike Guilfoyle (S, 24) picked up yet another save for the Bluefish.
The two sides finish their three-game battle tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Carlos Chantres (6-2, 3.02, RHP) will go for Nashua against Bridgeport's Masaru Imazeki (5-6, 4.27, RHP). For ticket information, call 883-BALL, logon to NashuaPride.com or stop by the Historic Holman Stadium box office.
