New Jersey Pride News Release

TOWSON, Md. - With the Pride up 16-15 with under a minute to play, New Jersey controlled the ball and needed only to run out the clock to pick up its fourth victory of the season. A mental mistake would ensure that was not to be.

Baltimore goalie Matt Russell was out of the goal double-teaming the play, and instead of holding onto the ball, Kevin Boland took a shot that missed the cage and allowed the Bayhawks to regain possession. Baltimore rookie Bill McGlone came the other direction and tied the game at 16 with seven seconds to play sending the game to overtime, the third time the Pride played bonus lacrosse in 2006.

Andy Corno won the opening face-off of overtime, but the team turned the ball over, and in transition, Baltimore's Mark Millon beat Rob Scherr over his shoulder to give the Bayhawks a dramatic, 17-16 win in front of a paid crowd of 3,167 at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University.

"What a bitter pill to swallow,'' said Pride head coach Peter Jacobs, who watched his team fall to 3-6 and come within one San Francisco victory tomorrow over Los Angeles of being eliminated from playoff contention. "We had that game and a mental mistake killed us.''

The loss was the second in overtime of the season for the Pride, the other coming at San Francisco July 1. New Jersey topped Boston 13-12 in extra minutes in the season opener.

The Pride looked poised for most of the fourth quarter to move to 4-5. With 8:08 to play and the score tied at 13, Liam Banks took a pass from Kevin Boland and ripped the first 2-point goal of his career from the top of the arc. Moments later Andy Crno won the face-off and came down and scored the second goal of his career for a 16-13 lead.

With the score 16-13, Baltimore defenseman Casey Connor came down with a long stick and drilled a 2-pointer of his own to cut the Pride lead to one with under four minutes to play.

Baltimore had the ball with just over a minute to play looking for the equalizer and Pride defenseman Ryan McClay took the ball away from Baltimore rookie Matt Ward and held the ball until New Jersey coach Peter Jacobs called a timeout with 50 tics left on the clock.

The Pride played a good first quarter and ended the first 15 minutes with a 6-3 lead thanks to a 4-0 run to end the frame. Kevin Boland, Conor Ford Adam Doneger and Liam Banks all found the back of the net in a 2:31 span to end the quarter.

Hubbard had his first hat trick of the season just 2:31 into the second quarter after a pair of man-up goals when he beat Baltimore goalie Matt Russell once over his left shoulder and once down low. New Jersey carried its momentum through the second quarter and ended the half with a 10-7 lead after Ben Grinnell scored a goal with 36 seconds to play in the stanza.

With 4:00 to play in the third quarter, the rain began coming down in buckets and the Bayhawks weathered the deluge to crawl all the way back and take a 12-11 lead with 3:46 to play. Baltimore took the lead when Kyle Dixon beat Rob Scherr from his backside between his legs. The Bayhawks led 13-11 after 45 minutes.
