San Francisco Dragons News Release
Los Angeles, CA -After the first meeting ever between the San Francisco Dragons (5-3) and the Los Angeles Riptide (3-5), the heavily favored Dragons will leave the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA on the wrong side of an upset, 17-10. Both teams are heading to San Francisco where the weekend series will resume Sunday at historic Kezar Stadium. 2,781 were in attendance.
"It was a very disappointing afternoon," remarked Dragons GM Doug Locker, "we're glad we get to play them again tomorrow."
The Dragons were coming into the game as the team that was only second in the league to Denver in terms of points scored, and the Riptide had only two wins, and both of those victories were over a winless Chicago squad. A mismatch on paper, this game serves to remind us why games are not played on paper.
Los Angeles and San Francisco started the game neck and neck, and closed out the first quarter in a 4-4 tie. The beginning of the second frame is when the game started to turn in LA's favor; in fact the Riptide went on an 11-1 run, shutting out the Dragons entirely in the second quarter. This defensive feat by the Riptide marked the first time in the Dragons brief history that their offense was kept scoreless in an entire quarter.
The Los Angeles offense was lead by midfielder Sean Lindsay. Lindsay, the Bud Light Player of the Game, had three goals, one of them a two- pointer. Lindsay scored all three of his goals during the Riptide's 11-1 run. He punctuated the run with points 10 and 11 with his two- pointer which completed the grandiose run with 4:07 left in the third.
Riptide Midfielder Graham Gill also scored three goals, and added one assist to equal Lindsay with four points total.
Held to their lowest point total of the season, the Dragons offense was lead by Matt Alrich, who had three goals. Newly acquired attackman Xander Ritz added one goal and one assist. Defenseman Eric Martin also tallied a two-point score for the Dragons.
The Dragons will be seeking to avenge this upset when the meet the Riptide tomorrow at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco at 1:00 PDT. The Game will be televised live on Comcast Sportsnet West.
