Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - As the Toros enter their 5th season in the USL Championship League, the Rio Grande Valley FC will be hosting LA Galaxy II on Sunday afternoon for their home opener at H-E-B Park.
The new 2020 season officially kicks off Sunday for both teams. With quite a few recognizable faces, the Toros are looking to make a difference in this new campaign. Returning Head Coach Gerson Echeverry is kicking off his third season with the squad and has incorporated new faces to the technical staff.
Los Dos is under the helm of former RGV FC head coach, Junior Gonzalez. Along Gonzalez, former Toros and Pharr-native, Omar Ontiveros is looking to return to the Valley and put an outstanding performance in front of his local family and friends.
The Toros are looking to be dangerous on the attacking side as new additions compliment well with the new goals; win. Brazilian native Taiberson Nunes is a key player to look out for in the RGV FC squad. He is dangerous and can create opportunities for the club. German rookie Timo Mehlich is a new face to also look out for as he can create more depth in the middle of the pitch alongside RGV native Isidro Martinez.
Last time both teams faced was early on in the 2019 season at H-E-B Park where the visiting team equalized the matchup with a score of 2-2. RGV FC totaled 13 shots, four on target while LA2 had nine total shots, four on target. The Toros goal scorers were Maalique Foster (34th minute) and Michael Salazar (57th minute). For Los Dos, Ontiveros scored the first goal of the matchup (16th minute) and Ethan Zubak struck with the equalizer in the 92nd minute.
The home series stands at 0-2-3 showing that the Toros have never won at home against the Galaxy II. With the new additions and returning players, the club is looking to change the record on Sunday afternoon.
