Real Monarchs News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Real Monarchs opened its title defense and 2020 USL Championship regular season on Saturday night, falling 1-0 at San Antonio FC at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas.

San Antonio started the game on the front foot, forcing David Ochoa into several diving saves in addition to a shot by Gonzalo Di Renza that hit the post in the 10th minute. After surviving the initial push from the home side, the Monarchs took the momentum. The Monarchs had multiple looks at goal in the final 20 minutes of the half but to no avail. Their best chance came in the 37th minute off of a free kick from Alvin Jones that found the foot of Kyle Coffee, but the shot was saved by SAFC Matt Cardone and the teams entered the break level at 0-0.

San Antonio once again looked to be the more dangerous side to start the second half and their sustained pressure was soon rewarded. In the 67th minute, Montgomery broke the deadlock with a goal from a direct cross from Luis Solignac. Trailing 1-0 the Monarchs began to apply some pressure of their own, but San Antonio held strong the rest of the way to earn the clean sheet and the 1-0 victory.

UP NEXT: Real Monarchs now face Phoenix Rising FC in its 2020 home opener on Saturday, March 14 at 3:00p MT at Zions Bank Stadium.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

SA: Callum Montgomery (Luis Solignac), 67th minute: After a San Antonio free kick spilled out of the box, a second service found Luis Solignac who crossed it dangerously into the box and found the foot of Callum Montgomery for the goal.
