July 20, 2023 - Canadian Premier League (CPL)
Atletico Ottawa News Release
Atlético Ottawa has won three consecutive matches in the Canadian Premier League and is looking to make it four from four with a trip to Halifax this weekend (KO 3 pm ET, live on OneSoccer). Halifax Wanderers recently slipped out of the playoff positions but remains within touching distance of Atlético as we approach, what could be, a pivotal game early into the second half of the season.
Here's everything you need to know before Saturday's match in Halifax.
Atlético Ottawa sits in 4th place in the Canadian Premier League with 21 points from 15 matches.
Halifax Wanderers is 6th with 19 points from 15 matches.
This is the third meeting between Ottawa and Halifax this season (1W-1D-0L).
Victory at home to Vancouver FC last weekend (3-1) was Ottawa's fourth consecutive win a TD Place which saw Head Coach Carlos González's side climb the table into a playoff position and to within five points of Pacific FC in 1st place.
Miguel Acosta, Alberto Zapater, Diego Espejo and Carl Haworth were named to the 'Team of the Week' for their performances in what was a triple-game week for Atleti.
Haworth registered four goal contributions in 120 minutes of play across three matches last week.
Acosta was also named 'Player of the Week'.
The Spanish defender now leads the league in tackles (32) and scored the opening goal against Vancouver.
Atlético striker Malcolm Shaw is the leading goal scorer for Ottawa in this fixture with 6 goals in 13 matches.
Former Halifax forward Samuel Salter heads out to Nova Scotia for the first time since joining Ottawa in the off-season.
Halifax Wanderers has endured inconsistent form under Head Coach Patrice Gheisar but remains a force to be reckoned with at the Wanderers Grounds.
The Wanderers are unbeaten at home since a defeat to York United in May 2023, beating Pacific FC, Forge FC, Cavalry FC and Valour FC in the last four matches.
Gheisar's squad has also been boosted by two new additions in João Morelli and Doneil Henry.
Canadian Men's National Team defender Henry joined Halifax until the end of the season this week.
Brazilian forward, Morelli, recently returned from a lengthy injury lay-off (suffered at TD Place early in the 2022 season) and is the leading scorer in the fixture with 8 goals.
Record head-to-head (all-time): 7W-1D-4L; 19 goals scored, 13 goals conceded.
