BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Travis Banga scored his first two goals with the Bloomington PrairieThunder in a 5-2 victory over Quad City at U.S. Cellular Coliseum before 1,895 people Wednesday night in International Hockey League action.
Goaltender Andrew Martin was also instrumental in the PrairieThunder's third straight victory by stopping 20 of 22 shots as Bloomington moved into sole possession of third place in the standings with a 12-7-1-2 (27 points). The loss dropped the Mallards' record dropped to 6-11-2-1 (15 points).
Banga, who was playing his third game with the PrairieThunder after being acquired in a trade with Muskegon last week, got his new team on the scoreboard first with 13:30 remaining in the first period off assists by Jason Lepine and Craig Macdonald.
Bloomington extended the advantage to 3-0 after two periods on goals by Jon Booras with 16:13 remaining in the second period and Billy Bagron at the 4:46 mark. Rookie newcomer Noel Coultice and Jamie Carroll had assists on the Booras goal, while another newcomer, Matthew Spiller, had the assist on Bagron's power play score.
Chris Lipsett gave Quad City its first goal late in the second period off assists by Justin White and A.J. Bozoian on the power play. Patrick Levesque cut the Mallards' deficit to 3-2 moments into the third period on assists by Shane Lovdahl and Terry Harrison.
Banga then added his second goal of the game 31 seconds later to give the PrairieThunder a 4-2 cushion. Carroll and Macdonald had the assists. Brett Holmberg scored the final Bloomington goal with an empty-netter with 67 seconds remaining.
Martin picked up his third straight victory in net to hike his season record to 6-3-1-2. Kyle Jones was the losing goalie, stopping 27 of 31 shots. Quad City was 1 for 6 on the power play, while Bloomington converted 1 of 4 opportunities.
The PrairieThunder continues its six-game homestand Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. contest against league-leading Muskegon at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
