PrairieThunder Trades Smyth

Bloomington PrairieThunder News Release

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Bloomington PrairieThunder coach Jarrod Skalde announced Thursday that rookie forward Matt Smyth has been traded to Flint to complete an earlier deal that brought center Rick Varone to the team Dec. 29.

The 20-year-old Smyth was then traded to Dayton for John Olynyk. Smyth had two goals and two assists for four points in five games with the PrairieThunder.

"We hated to trade Matt because he has such a bright future," said Skalde. "But we had to complete the deal with Flint before the trade deadline on Friday. And it was the right thing to do for Matt's future.

"When we get our more experienced players back from injuries, Matt's ice team would be limited. This gives him the opportunity to play a lot more and gain experience."

The PrairieThunder returns to action with a 7:05 p.m. contest against Flint at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The Generals trail Bloomington by seven points in the race for the fourth and final postseason playoff berth.
