Dayton Gems Sign Forward Matt Smyth

The Dayton Gems, proud members of the International Hockey League, announced the signing of rookie right winger Matt Smyth. Smyth played four games with Bloomington under a professional tryout agreement. He has one goal and one assist. The 5'11" 180 pounder comes to the Gems as part of an earlier trade between Flint and Bloomington for futures which will send Gems forward Mike Olynyk to Flint. Smythe is a native of Orlando, Florida who completed last season with Couchiching of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He scored 52 goals with 56 assists for 108 points in 52 games. He was a 1st round draft pick in the Ontario, Major Jr. Hockey League. Coach John Marks: "Matt Smyth brings excellent skills and skating ability and a booming slap shot. We are very excited about his addition to our Gems hockey team."

Sunday, March 21st at Hara Arena the Gems will meet the Fort Wayne Komets for a 5pm game on Scout Night. Local scout troops will be recognized at the game. The evening will begin with local country music star Jesse Lyn Fisher from the Lebanon Grand Opry singing the National Anthem. Groups are welcome and fund-raising programs are available. Following the game, be sure to bring your skates for our final Skate with the Team evening for this season. All adult tickets only $10. Student and Children tickets $7. Groups are welcome and parking is free.

Upcoming events include: Trading Card Nights, An evening with the King - Elvis Tribute Concert following the game, Singles Night - sponsored by Single Source News, Generation Dayton Night, Restaurant Employees Night, Jersey Auctions and visits from the Gem City Roller Girls and Bud Girls. Don't forget all Wednesdays are Dollar Beer night and Frothy Fridays have $2 drafts.

Monday evenings join the Gems at Fox and Hound in Beavercreek at 9pm as they become Dayton Icon judges. Thursdays have lunch with the players at Brixx downtown. See you at noon!
