PrairieThunder extends streak to four

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Bloomington PrairieThunder erupted for three goals in the second period to extend its winning streak to a franchise-record four games Thursday night with a 5-3 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings before 2,809 people at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The victory moved the PrairieThunder's record to 22-38-4 and pushed the team within eight points of the final playoff spot in the United Hockey League postseason race.

Goaltender Kris Tebbs, who joined the team just before the trade deadline last week, registered his fourth straight victory without a loss for the PrairieThunder. He stopped 31 of 34 shots.

Bloomington's Alex Goupil scored his first of two goals 9:10 into the first period on a power play off assists from B.J. Gaustad and John Spoltore. Kalamazoo then gained a 2-1 lead on goals by Kory Karlander and Adam Elzinga late in the first period.

The PrairieThunder scored back-to-back goals within 2 minutes, 30 seconds of each other to take a 3-2 lead in the second period. Jon Booras scored the first goal 29 seconds into the period on assists by Kristjan Jefkins and Mike Zbriger.

Jefkins added his first goal with the PrairieThunder moments later on assists by Zbriger and Booras. But Karlander tied the game eight minutes later on his second goal before Jarad Bourassa scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:26 left in the second period on a power play with assists going to Spoltore and Goupil.

Goupil added his second goal with 23 seconds remaining in the game after Kalamazoo pulled its goaltender Tom Askey, who saved 17 of 21 shots.

Bloomington returns to action Friday at 7:05 p.m. against Flint at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
