BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Jan Jas scored as the 11th shooter in a sudden-death shootout to give the Bloomington PrairieThunder a 4-3 International Hockey League victory over Fort Wayne before 2,677 people at U.S. Cellular Coliseum on Wednesday.
The victory avenged a 4-3 shootout loss to the Komets on Sunday and hiked the PrairieThunder's record to 15-22-1-2 (33 points). It was the fourth shootout game for Bloomington in its last five contests.
The PrairieThunder returns to action Friday with a 7:05 p.m. contest at home against Flint. The loss dropped Fort Wayne's record to 22-14-1-6 (51 points).
Bloomington scored the first two goals of the game as Jon Booras knocked in the first one on a short-handed effort off an assist by Henry Kuster at the 18:10 mark of the first period. Brett Holmberg scored the second goal 89 seconds into the second period on assists by Marty Standish and Travis Granbois.
Fort Wayne cut its deficit in half when David Hukalo netted a goal with 3:27 remaining in the second period on assists by Mathieu Curadeau and Guy Dupuis.
Granbois took the puck the length of the ice to score Bloomington's third goal unassisted with 12:23 left in regulation for a 3-1 advantage. But the Komets' Sean O'Connor scored 30 seconds later with assists to Rick Varone and Maxime Gravelle.
The Komets then tied the score with 5:31 remaining in regulation on a Konstatin Shafranov goal with assists to Hukalo and Curadeau.
Fort Wayne drew first blood in the shootout when Varone scored as the first shooter. Jas knotted the shootout with what would be his first of two shootout goals as the PrairieThunder's second shooter.
Both teams went through eight shooters before Jas beat losing goalie Sabastien Laplante with the game-winner.
Jason Wolfe, who joined the PrairieThunder on Friday, made his debut a successful one by stopping 41 of 44 shots in regulation/overtime and 11 of 12 in the shootout. Laplante stopped 34 of 37 shots in 65 minutes.
