Wilson Tobs News Release
Wilson, N.C. - Three powerful righties will hit the mound for the Wilson Tobs this summer. Ryan Miller (North Carolina Central University), Stephen Hansen (University of Pittsburgh), and Mitch Myers (University of Pittsburgh) will be throwing the heat at Historic Fleming Stadium as they join the Tobs 2020 summer roster. These veteran power arms are an extremely important part of their schools pitching staff and will be viewed the same way for the Tobs.
Our first power arm is 6'2 210 lb sophomore righty Ryan Miller. Miller hails from Bladen, PA and will be coming to Wilson from local school North Carolina Central University. Miller had a stellar freshman year at NCCU where he was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team as well the MEAC freshman of the year. During his freshman campaign he made 12 starts, pitched 71 innings, struck out 73, and only walked an impressive 13 batters. He was always hard to hit which led to him holding opponents to a .266 batting average against. In this year's shortened spring season Miller continued his dominance going 2-1 in 4 starts. In 23 innings pitched he struck out 33, walked 9, and kept his opponents at bay with a .250 batting average against. Tobs head coach Harry Markotay is extremely excited about the addition of Miller and looks forward to watching him stifle hitters all summer long.
Next up is dangerous veteran right hander Stephen Hansen. Hansen is an absolute workhorse as he comes to the Tobs with over 200 innings pitched at the Division (1) collegiate level. Hansen has been a 4-year weekend starter at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. The 6'1 Manalapan, NJ native has been a main stay in the Gales rotation where he had 32 starts, 48 appearances, 157 strikeouts, and held batters to a minuscule 57 walks in 211.2 innings pitched. Attacking the strike zone and keeping hitters in a defensive mind set is what makes Hansen so valuable to the Tobs. Originally Hansen was signed to the Tobs for the 2019 season but was shut down due to his spring workload and arm stress. After graduating this spring Hansen will be transferring to the University of Pittsburgh in the ACC to start his master's and finish his last year of collegiate baseball eligibility. The Tobs are thrilled to finally see him suit up in black and yellow this summer.
Our final arm for Tobs fans to get excited about is Lanette, Alabama native Mitch Myers. Myers comes to Wilson as a Panther from the University of Pittsburgh, part of the ACC conference. Myers came north to Pittsburgh from Florida Southwestern State College (NJCAA) where he posted a stout sophomore season. In his sophomore campaign he took the mound in 79 innings, posted a 7-2 record, and collected 88 strikeouts to just 23 walks. While at Pittsburgh this spring Myers solidified his spot in the starting rotation as the Saturday starter in conference play. In 4 starts and 23 innings pitched Myers pounded the strike zone which resulted in 4 walks, 30 strikeouts, and a very impressive .230 batting average against. The Tobs are excited to see Myers attack hitters from the mound of Historic Fleming Stadium come July.
