New York Power News Release

Last Week in Review: April 12 New York Power 1, Washington Freedom 3 @ Washington

Upcoming Week: Power vs. San Diego Spirit @ New York. Season Series: First Meeting. All-time Regular Season Series: Series tied 2-2-2. Top Scorers: New York - Emily Janss (2g, 0a = 4pts) & Tammy Pearman (2g - 0a = 4pts); San Diego - Shannon MacMillan (3g, 1a = 7pts). Power Key Players Out: New York - D Sara Whalen (ACL); D Kristy Whelchel (ACL). Power-Spirit Notes: This game will mark the home coaching debut of Tom Sermanni. The Power will look to break a one-game losing streak to the Spirit. Every game in this series has been decided by a goal or less, besides the 6-1 Power loss on April 20, 2002. WUSA career points leader, Tiffeny Milbrett, will look for her first goal against the Spirit defense. San Diego is the only team that Milbrett has not tallied a goal against in her WUSA career. In four games against San Diego, Milbrett has collected two assists. In three games at Mitchel Athletic Complex, the teams have combined to score four goals (4/29/01 - 0-0 tie; 5/25/02 - 2-1 Power win; 7/20/02 - 1-0 Spirit win). Last time these two teams met, Spirit forward Julie Fleeting scored the game-goal in the 90th minute, giving San Diego a 1-0 win at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Key Matchup: New York D Cheryl Salisbury vs. San Diego F Julie Fleeting: In her debut with the Power, Salisbury is jumping straight into the fire going up against one of the best offenses in the league. Salisbury has missed the first two Power matches due to national team duty, but will rely on that national team experience in dealing with San Diego. At 6-0, Salisbury is an intimidating force in central defense for the Power.

Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni on San Diego: "It should be an interesting game, especially with regards to the trade the two teams made last year. San Diego has a very good attacking offense and looks good on paper."

POWER INJURY UPDATE
OUT: D Sara Whalen (ACL); D Kristy Whelchel (ACL)
DOUBTFUL: none
QUESTIONABLE: Saskia Webber (Calf Strain - R)
PROBABLE: none

Power Quotes:

"I think we are going to take a positive outlook on this game. We didn't win, but we played very well, considering from last weekend to this weekend. We are going to keep making strides forward and next week is going to be even better."

- Shannon Boxx

"I think it shows we have some character in the team. If we forget about the actual result, I just want to concentrate on how well we performed and the things we did well. I think we controlled the ball for long periods, but I think we lacked composure in the final third to finish things off."

- Tom Sermanni

Power Notes:

Power Debuts

Australians Cheryl Salisbury and Joey Peters will both be making their Power debuts after missing the first two games, due to National Team duty. Salisbury, at 6-0, is a physical central defender. She is also Australia's all-time leading goal scorer with 25 goals. Peters is a creative, attacking midfielder who loves going to goal. Both players have played for Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni in the past, when he served as their head coach with the Australian National Team. Sermanni himself will be making his home coaching debut at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Fast Start

The Power will look to get off to a quick start against the Spirit. They have won just five of 26 games (5-21-0) when their opponent has scored first, and are 0-14-0 when trailing at the half. Emily Janss tallied in the second minute back on May 25, 2002, as the Power went on to win (2-1) their only home game last year.

National TV

The Power's home opener will be broadcasted live on PAX TV, the national TV broadcaster of the WUSA. The Power have a 4-4-2 overall record and a 2-1-1 home record when playing on national TV.

0-For-April at Home

April hasn't been kind to the Power at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Power will look for their first home win in the month of April against the Spirit. Their current record for the month of April at home is 0-1-1.
