Can Anyone Stop the Beat?

April 14, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, April 14, 2003) - After seeing Atlanta outscore its opponents 11-0 in the first two games of the season, WUSA teams have to be wondering if anyone can stop the high-scoring Beat. With the 5-0 win over New York on April 5 and Saturday's 6-0 victory over Boston, Atlanta (2-0-0, 6 points) now has 11 goals, nearly a third of last year's regular-season total of 31.

One of the key reasons for Atlanta's success is newcomer Maribel Dominguez. The Mexican national team captain has made a major impact in the WUSA, scoring four goals and adding two assists in her first two WUSA matches. Dominguez lit up Boston Saturday afternoon with a hat trick and one assist as the Beat defeated the Breakers 6-0 at Herndon Stadium. Dominguez had three goals and an assist, while teammate Homare Sawa added two goals. Known for her speed and clever dribbling, the 5-foot-4 Dominguez also showed on Saturday that she is deadly with set pieces, scoring her first two goals off free kicks.

"Maribel's individual flair and her ability to bring everybody else into the attack just made it too much for Boston on the day," Atlanta Head Coach Tom Stone said after Saturday's win. "Maribel just thinks it's like this every week in the WUSA, five (goals) one week, six one week. I try to tell her it's not normal."

In Saturday's victory over Boston, the Beat tied the WUSA single-game record for goals scored by a team, (6) and recorded the largest margin of victory in a WUSA game. Dominguez's seven points (3g, 1a) tied a WUSA record set by Liu Ailing of Philadelphia on August 26, 2001.

Heading into the season, Stone knew that he needed to make some changes to a Beat roster that had remained nearly the same for the first two seasons. Near the top of Stone's list was adding team speed. It was a tough decision to part ways with Chinese national team players Sun Wen and Liping Wang during the offseason, but Stone and the Beat are thrilled with Dominguez's performance.

"We were all enamored with the big names on the big teams around the world," Stone added. "Sunny (Sun Wen) was a superstar all by herself. I don't think that many players like that exist. Maribel has pace up front and sophistication in the final third of the field. She's been good creating for Charmaine (Hooper), and creating for herself."

Despite the fact Atlanta has outscored opponents 11-0 in two games, Stone wants to reinforce that defense wins championships. In fact, Boston had the run of play for the majority of the first half on Saturday. The Breakers had the best scoring opportunity early when Maren Meinert took a shot from the left side of the penalty area that was cleared from in front of the goal by Beat defender Nancy Augustyniak in the 17th minute

"I can tell you the first player I talked to after the game was (goalkeeper Briana) Scurry," Stone added. "I pulled her aside and said 'It won't show up in the statistics but you won this game for us by keeping us in the game in the first half.'"

"We came out with guns firing in the second half and that was pretty much it," said Scurry, who recorded her WUSA-record 15th all-time shutout. I'm just glad we're finally offensively - just taking off like we should. This has actually been two years coming and now it's coming around for us."

After two sizzling performances, Atlanta faces the challenge of a bye week before heading to Washington on April 26 in a nationally televised match on PAX TV to take on a Freedom team that ranked second in the WUSA in team defense in 2002.

WORLD CUP UPDATE ... AUSTRALIA QUALIFIES: WUSA players Cheryl Salisbury (New York), Joanne Peters (New York), Diane Alagich (San Jose) and Kelly Golebiowski (Washington) led Australia to its third consecutive appearance in the Women's World Cup after the Matilda's defeated New Zealand 2-0 on April 13 to win the Oceania qualifying group. Australia becomes the eleventh team to secure a spot among the 16 nations that will compete in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. Host China receives an automatic berth, and Germany, Norway, Sweden, Russia, France, USA, Canada, Nigeria, and Ghana already qualified through their Confederation's qualifying process. A total of 99 countries around the world have or will compete in the qualification stages of the 2003 Women's World Cup.

Although Salisbury (calf strain) and Golebiowski (leg injury) did not play against New Zealand, Peters gave Australia the lead midway through the first half. Danielle Small scored the Matildas second goal in the 2-0 win.

Following Australia's qualification for World Cup 2003, Soccer Australia stated that it is prepared to host the women's World Cup soccer tournament if it has to be moved from China because of the SARS virus. SARS has postponed the May 24 draw for the tournament while the Asian zone qualifying rounds that were scheduled for this weekend also have been postponed.

"If the opportunity arose and FIFA approached us to stage the tournament we would seriously consider it," Soccer Australia acting chief executive Stefan Kamasz told the media in Australia.

United May 17 and July 19 at RFK Stadium, and the Boston Breakers and New England Revolution will host a doubleheader on May 3 at Gillette Stadium.

"BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM" STARS KICK IT AROUND WITH THE FREEDOM: Washington Freedom fans were treated to more than the club's 3-1 victory over the New York Power on April 12. The stars of the hit movie "Bend it Like Beckham", Parminder Nagra and Keira Kinghtley, participated in the ceremonial first kick of the game. "Bend it Like Beckham" recently opened in the United States and has captivated audiences throughout the country. The story of a British-Indian teenager pursuing her dreams of soccer glory despite the objections of her traditionalist parents. The film features a montage of WUSA highlights. A lighthearted comedy, the two main characters aspire to play college soccer in the United States and eventually compete in the WUSA.

LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY IN FREEDOM WIN: Washington's Jacqui Little recorded the best performance of her WUSA career as she scored two of the Freedom's three goals in a 3-1 victory over New York on April 12. In what many onlookers considered one of the prettiest goals in WUSA history, Little dribbled into the left side of the New York Power penalty area, sidestepped two defenders and curled a perfect shot past two more and inside the left post in the 39th minute. For her second score, she settled a hard shot from Freedom defender Carrie Moore, turned toward the goal and chipped the ball over Power goalkeeper Carly Smolak. In addition, she was involved in the third goal in the Freedom's home opener when she sent a pass to Mia Hamm that helped set up Hamm's penalty kick score.

DESPITE 3-1 LOSS, NEW YORK IMPROVING: New York lost its second consecutive match when the Power went down 3-1 at Washington, but Head Coach Tom Sermanni and the rest of the club remain optimistic. After all, the Power outshot the Freedom 10-2 in the second half, and 16-8 for the game, but Tiffeny Milbrett and company are still struggling to finish their chances.

"Overall, I thought that we played much better this week," Sermanni said. "We had some chances, and we just have to work on converting when we have those opportunities. "If we forget about the actual result, I just want to concentrate on how well we performed and the things we did well.

WASHINGTON'S STREAK CONTINUES: With its 3-1 victory over the New York Power of Saturday, April 12, the Washington Freedom extended its regular season unbeaten streak to 11 games (a WUSA record). This streak dates back to June 29, 2002 (a 4-1 victory over the New York Power). During this streak, the Freedom has outscored its opponents 29-14.

Saturday's victory also extended the Freedom's regular season win streak to six games (also a WUSA record), dating back to July 27, 2002 (a 1-0 victory over San Diego). During this streak, Washington has outscored its opponents 18-8.
