Power Set Roster For Opening Day

Charleston, WV (April 4, 2009) - The West Virginia Power will begin the 2009 season at home against the Lexington Legends on Thursday, April 9th, and today, they set their roster for the opener against the Legends.

The roster includes 12 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and five outfielders.

The pitching staff includes Pittsburgh's 2007 second round draft pick Duke Welker. Six of the 12 arms on the staff for opening night are free agent signees. Tyler Cox and Rudy Owens are the only two left handers on pitching staff.

The infield includes a few players who enjoyed some success last season. Bobby Spain hit .312 and had 22 doubles in 67 games with Hickory last season. Chase D'Arnaud, a fourth round pick in the 2008 draft out of Pepperdine was a mid-season All-Star last year with the State College Spikes. Six-Foot, Seven-Inch First Baseman Calvin Anderson hit six homeruns in 45 games with the Spikes last year, and is the son of former Pittsburgh Steeler Fred Anderson.

Robby Grossman and Quincy Latimore are expected to lead the charge in the Power outfield. Erik Huber, who hit a dozen homeruns with Hickory last season, will begin the season with the Power as well.

Five players on the roster were drafted in 2008. Nine of the 25 were selected in 2007, there are two 2006 draftees and Greg Picart is the lone draftee from 2003. There are eight players on the roster who signed via free agency.

West Virginia will host WVU Tech in an exhibition game at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. The Power will open the season at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday, April 9th against the Lexington Legends at 7:05 PM.
