Power Display, Durbin Gem Keep Barnstormers Rolling

Neither the All-Star break nor the signing of Terry Tiffee could slow down the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Lancaster clubbed nine extra base hits, including a club record-tying seven doubles, and J.D. Durbin pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Barnstormers captured the opener of the second half from the host York Revolution, 8-1, Friday evening at Sovereign Bank Stadium.

The win was Lancaster's ninth in its last 10 games and 31st in the last 41 for the first half Freedom Division champions. It also narrowed York's lead in the CarMax War of the Roses to 6-5.

Durbin (5-6) beat York for the first time in four tries this season. Four of the five hits he allowed were singles. The right-hander walked one and struck out six, including four of the last five Revolution batters on the night. Only a double by Liu Rodriguez, passed ball and sacrifice fly by Salvador Paniagua in the eighth kept Durbin from being the second pitcher in team history to fire back-to-back shutouts.

Lancaster put only one run on the board in the first six innings off Chris Cody (4-10). Ryan Harvey reached base with two outs in the second on an errant toss to first by Cody on a dribbler up the first base line. Emerson Frostad followed with a single to right center. Harvey sprinted for third and drew a late throw. On the throw, Frostad bolted for second. Chris Nowak's return throw to second was mishandled by Rodriguez, allowing Harvey to cross the plate.

The score remained, 1-0, until the Barnstormers put on a power show in the seventh. Harvey led off with a home run to dead center. One out later, Kody Kirkland dropped a double into the right field corner. Brad Boyer grounded out to first for the second out, but Adam Godwin laced a double into right center for a 3-0 lead to chase Cody. Fehlandt Lentini followed that with a two-run homer over the towering left field wall against reliever James Houser.

Harvey and Kirkland set up the eighth with singles off Stephen Penney, and Boyer brought home two runs with a long double to right center. Bridger Hunt, in his first at bat with Lancaster, capped a long trip to the plate with Lancaster's seventh double of the night, a smash inside the third base bag.

The series will continue on Saturday evening. Lancaster sends Dwayne Pollok (5-0) to the mound against right-hander Omar Javier (1-5). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app starting at 6:15.

NOTES: Durbin has thrown 21 1/3 consecutive innings without an earned run...His ERA for the year dropped to 4.05...He took the league lead with his third complete game...The other Barnstormers game with seven doubles came in May of 2007 against the Camden Riversharks...Two more doubles were taken away...Blake Gailen hit a sharp grounder off the third base bag in the first inning that was played on the hop by Nowak, who got an out on Lentini coming around third...Michael Hernandez made a diving catch down the right field line against Frostad in the eighth...Harvey homered for the ninth time in his last 18 games...Jaime Pedroza doubled in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 13 games...Godwin's is alive at 10...Gailen has a nine-game streak, Frostad an eight and Kirkland a seven.
