Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals wrap up their July 4th Weekend celebration by playing the finale of their four-game series against the rival Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 1:05 p.m. By claiming two of the first three games, The P-Nats now lead this Carolina League edition of the "Battle of the Beltway" 9-4. Frederick was the last team to lose a series to Potomac from Pfitzner Stadium when Trent Jewett's club swept the Keys in two games from May 1-2. Since then, the P-Nats are 0-6-1 in their last seven home series. Potomac can snap that skid with a victory today!

Thanks in large part to Thursday's one-hitter twirled by the Keys, the P-Nats as a club are hitting just .255 -- down from .270 at the start of the series -- against Frederick in 13 games this season. Potomac's lineup has still managed to club 25 2B's, 17 HR's and is averaging 5.8 runs per game against their geographic rivals in '09. The pitching staff has been superb posting an ERA of 3.31 (43ER/117.0) with Dan Leatherman, Jeff Mandel and Brad Meyers each posting two victories apiece against the Baltimore Orioles affiliate.

TODAYS OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Zach Britton, 21, was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2006 First- Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles out of Weatherford (TX) High School. The southpaw ranked as the 12th best prospect in the Baltimore organization at the start of the season and he's been very impressive in his four seasons with the O's. Last year, Britton finished seventh in the South Atlantic League in ERA (3.12) and tied the Delmarva lead with his 12 victories while concluding the campaign ranked second on the Shorebirds with 114 strikeouts. He also made 15 quality starts for the Low-A club. One of his strongest outings came on June 25 when he struck out a season-high nine batters against the Lake County Captains in a Delmarva 10-6 triumph.

He's brought similar results in his first season in the Carolina League in 2009. In the first half, Britton was the only hurler not named Brad Meyers to post a sub-2.00 ERA in the CL when he went 4-2 with a 1.94 ERA (15 ER/69.2IP). He's had five scoreless outings in his first 14 appearances and the league is hitting just .224 against this left-hander. The P-Nats managed just five hits and scored two unearned runs against him on June 13th from Frederick -- a contest won by the Keys 7-3.
