June 8, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Bossier-Shreveport quarterback SHERARD POTEETE, Cape Fear wide receiver/defensive back MITCH GALLOWAY and Green Bay wide receiver/line backer ROBERT GARTH have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 10 of the 2004 season.

BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Poteete (6-1, 200, Southern Illinois), in his fourth season, guided the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings to a 67-28 victory on the road over the Memphis Xplorers. Through the air Poteete completed 20 of 26 passes for 279 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. The af2's career rushing leader also ran four times for 16 yards and a touchdown. All of this after a scoreless first quarter when the Battle Wings found themselves down 16-0. Poteete changed the momentum of the game when he found Larry Holloway for a five-yard touchdown on the last play of the second half. This was the first score in a stretch of seven straight touchdowns for Battle Wings. In this stretch they outscored Memphis 47-0. Poteete found Bo Smith for three straight touchdowns to start the second half. Smith was the last Battle Wings player to win a weekly award when he won the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week in Week 6 of this season for a seven-touchdown performance. This is the third time Poteete has won the Offensive Player of the Week award. He earned this same honor in Week 9 of the 2002 season and Week 2 of last season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK Galloway (5-9, 180, East Carolina), in his third season, made plays in all areas of the game to help propel his Wildcats to a 78-51 victory over the Albany Conquest. On offense Galloway caught six passes for 37 yards. He scored the first touchdown of the game on a touchdown run from one yard out, but a stretch of plays in the second half earned him this weekly honor. On the second to last play of the third quarter Galloway intercepted a pass deep in Albany's zone. Two plays later on a trick play Galloway completed a six-yard pass to Chris McKinney for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff Galloway recovered the ball off the nets in the endzone to record another touchdown. He also recorded 3.5 tackles (1UA 3A) and returned a kickoff for fourteen yards on the nights to add to his totals. This is the first weekly award for Galloway. Teammate Matt Burstein won the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week award in Week 3 of this season.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Garth (6-3, 235, New Mexico State), in his third season, scored two defensive touchdowns in a 57-29 win over division rival Peoria. His first score came when Green Bay was already up 14-0. With Peoria driving Garth intercepted a Talmadge Hill pass and returned it 40 yards to put Green Bay up 21-0 after the extra point. His next touchdown all but put the game away for the Blizzard. On the last play of the second half Garth blocked a Peoria field goal, then recovered the ball in the endzone to give the Blizzard a 34-3 halftime lead. Garth also added an interception in the third quarter that set up a touchdown pass on the next play. He also recorded 2.5 tackles (2UA 1A) on the night. This is the first weekly ward for Garth but he is the fourth Green Bay player to win a weekly accolade this season. In Week 7 Chris Greisen won the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week award while DeRonn Finley won the U.S. Ironman of the Week award.
