Postgame Quotes: Colorado Rapids vs LA Galaxy - September 11, 2019

September 12, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Colorado Rapids News Release

Colorado Rapids Head Coach Robin Fraser

Thoughts on tonight's match...

"I'm so proud -- I'm so proud of the team. You look at the players that they have, obviously some very accomplished players -- then you look at our group and they just play as a team -- they play for each other, they fight for each other, and play cohesively offensively and defensively. Every week -- it's been three weeks, but every week I think -- well, that was a good one, but what happens next week? What keeps happening is that they keep playing like a team. As a result they keep getting good results. It's been really a fun start for me as a coach and I feel really happy to be a part of this group.

On the game plan for the night...

"I'll start again with what I said, which is a team, [Sam] Vines goes down sick and we had to make some adjustments. We had a center back playing right back, we had a right back playing left back, we had two left footed center backs and the guys just did what they needed to do. That's the first thing, the team does what you need them to do. We talked about trying to deny service in to Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], getting people around him, and getting people challenging. He's obviously a huge guy and very good in the air, so he was going to win his fair share. We planned for if we won it and we planned for if he won it. They were able to read the right things at the right time and make it difficult for him tonight. I thought Danny [Wilson] and Tommy [Smith] did a really good job with limiting what he could do, also the guys around them did a really good job of being responsible.

On what he's done to get positive results...

"I don't know if it's me that's done it -- they're a pretty resilient group. I would say that we've tried to clearly define objectives. When you have clearly defined objectives, actually start to hit them, and have success it's really the best possible scenario. They believe in what they're doing. If you look at the progression over the last three games they look more confident. They looked more confident after the [New York] Red Bulls game, they looked more confident after the Seattle {Sounders] game, and throughout this game you could see their confidence growing. I think it really has a lot to do with them hitting objectives and recognizing how good they can be in different games. When you start to have that confidence, it starts to permeate throughout the entire team you start to see the affect you do now. Players start to play with a lot of belief and a lot of confidence. I think they're in a really good spot at the moment."

Colorado Rapids Midfielder Cole Bassett

On scoring the opening goal tonight...

"It felt so good. I haven't scored a goal in MLS since Orlando, which was April, so to find the back of the net and score felt really great. When you're scoring goals, they kind of just keep coming, so hopefully I can keep it going."

On the impact of having new head coach...

"For me personally, I think it's just the way he makes me think about the game -- finding certain pockets of space that allow us to push the team forward. Ultimately, I think it's the same attitude and energy we've had throughout the season, but we're just trying to press teams. We know if teams come here, to the altitude, they're going to eventually get tired and we can wear them down. That's how we scored, it happened later on in the game when they got tired, and we just took advantage of it."

Colorado Rapids Midfielder Nicolás Mezquida

On scoring the game-winning goal...

"I'm so happy. Just three days after the last game on Saturday and a lot of players were away due to injury or the national team. We played with almost the same guys that started the last game so we were a little bit tired, but happy because we got three points. I'm happy to have scored a goal."

On Clint Irwin's performance tonight...

"I think it was the best game he's had this season. I'm so proud of him."

Los Angeles Galaxy Head Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto

Thoughts on tonight's match...

"I'm very surprised -- It's very clear that it wasn't a penalty for them [Colorado]. The referee went to check the VAR [video assistant referee], but he didn't go. Nobody told him he had to go. It's very clear that it was a penalty. It was the player from Colorado who tried to kick the ball out. For me it was very clear, but I don't know what to say. The referee has the image on the field and if he doesn't know clearly what happened, then he can check the monitors. We lost and we didn't get any points."

On what was missing offensively...

"The offense had chances to score. The last chance was very clear, but we couldn't [score]. We need to figure it out because we have five games to get into the playoffs. I saw some results and noticed other teams were losing too. We need to get the three points next Sunday at home against [Sporting] Kansas."

Los Angeles Galaxy Goalkeeper David Bingham

On tonight's match...

"It's devastating. To come out at halftime tied, then to give up the type of goals we did and to have some things not go our way, it's disappointing and there's nothing we can do about it now."

On tonight's defensive performance...

"We didn't play well enough defensively. I think they had 14 or 15 shots on target tonight, so when you give up that many shots on target, something is bound to go wrong. We definitely have to limit our opponents chances, and go back home and get ready for this weekend."

Los Angeles Galaxy Forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic

On how important tonight's match was...

"I think it was a big opportunity to gain some points, but we obviously lost. I see us in the same situation as last season where we needed to win the last five or six games. We need to win these next games to get into the playoffs, but I think it will be very difficult because when teams play us they have to give 200% -- but, we need to be better than what we are."

On how the team looked offensively...

"I think we had a couple of good chances, but it was even. When we had a good chance, they also had a good chance. The last ten minutes was chaos. We scored, and then they scored, but then we could have scored at the end as well. Before the last ten minutes, the game was very boring."

On what needs to happen to close out the season...

"I think we need to step it up. If we really want it we need to step it up and play with a lot of will, and play with the pressure. I think the pressure is good, I know we can handle it, but everyone deals with it differently. We also need to show that we want it every day, not just in games, but also in training. We will see what happens."
