San Jose Giants News Release
Jason Fernandez and two Stockton relievers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Ports to a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Fernandez worked 7 2/3 innings while Chris Carter belted his league-leading 26th home run of the season as Stockton completed a three-game sweep. The loss, San Jose's seventh in their last eight games, dropped the Giants' overall record to 57-37.
Jesse English (9-4) suffered the loss on the mound for San Jose despite matching a season-high with nine strikeouts over six innings. English surrendered three runs (all earned) on five hits.
The Ports broke a scoreless tie with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Matt Sulentic started the rally with a one-out infield single to second base. Raul Padron followed with a line drive single to right field before Carlos Arrieche struck out swinging. Archie Gilbert then stepped to the plate and lined a single into right field to plate Sulentic with the first run of the contest as Padron advanced all the way to third. Padron would eventually score on a wild pitch to give Stockton a 2-0 advantage.
Carter extended the Ports lead in the bottom of the sixth with a towering solo home run to deep left center field. For Carter, it was his 12th round-tripper of the second half.
Fernandez (9-5) limited the Giants to five hits during his stint on the mound. The right-hander walked two and struck out six.
Tyler Graham doubled with one out in the first inning, but Fernandez followed with a strikeout of Travis Denker before Andy D'Alessio grounded out to end the frame. In the second, a pair of walks put runners on first and second with one out. However, Jackson Williams grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. The Giants would not put more than one runner on base in an inning for the remainder of the night.
In the top of the eighth, Williams led off with a single into center field before he was erased on Sharlon Schoop's fielder's choice ground out. After Brad Boyer grounded out, Fernandez was lifted from the game in favor of Patrick Currin. Mike McBryde was up next and he lofted a fly ball to deep left center field that was caught by a diving Jermaine Mitchell to end the inning.
Sam Demel notched his 13th save of the season with a perfect top of the ninth. Demel induced three consecutive groundouts to seal the Ports shutout victory.
English began his outing with four dominant innings of work. The southpaw allowed only two baserunners during the span - a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first to Gilbert and a single in the third from Gilbert. English struck out two batters each in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames.
