Portland Wins Fourth Straight on Friday Night

Portland, Maine - Nick Northcut went 2-for-4 and drove in three RBI, backing up 6.0 shutout innings from Bryan Mata, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (53-53, 23-14) to a 5-2 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (51-54, 11-25) on Friday at Hadlock Field.

Mata and Flying Squirrels starter Kai-Wei Teng started the game in a pitcher's duel. Teng made it through four scoreless innings, while Mata held strong through five, giving Portland another chance to create runs.

Teng allowed the first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Wilyer Abreu collected the first hit of the night for the Sea Dogs, a double to left field. One out later, Izzy Wilson reached on a throwing error, advancing Abreu to third. Nick Northcut doubled off the Maine Monster in left, scoring Wilson and Abreu, giving the Sea Dogs a 3-0 lead.

Portland was quick to jump back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning with Richmond reliever Melvin Adon on the mound. Ceddanne Rafaela reached on a bunt single and Stephen Scott grounded a base hit into center, putting runners on the corners. In the next at-bat, Scott stole second and drew a throw from Richmond catcher Brandon Martorano, allowing Rafaela to score from third, making it a 4-0 game. Alex Binelas and Wilson worked back-to-back walks and Northcut reached on a fielding error scoring Scott. Tyler Dearden hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Binelas, increasing the Sea Dogs lead to 5-0.

The Flying Squirrels scored their first run in the top of the seventh inning. Jacob Heyward led off with a walk and Casey Schmitt singled. One out later, Franklin Labour walked to load the bases. A wild pitch by major league rehabber Tyler Danish brought in Heyward, making it a 5-1 lead for the Sea Dogs.

Richmond was able to muster one more run in the top of the ninth. Casey Schmitt led off with a triple and Riley Mahan brought him home with a groundout to first. Brendan Nail struck out the final two batters, securing a 5-2 win for the Sea Dogs.

Mata (3-2, 2.45 ERA) tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing five hits, and struck out six in his third win of the year. Teng (5-8, 4.93 ERA) tossed 5.0 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits, walking two, and striking out 10 batters in his eighth loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels play the penultimate game of the series on Saturday with a 6:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Portland's starter is to be announced and will face Richmond LHP Jake Dahlberg (5-7, 4.06 ERA).
