Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons, proud members of the North American Hockey League, defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks 4-3 in an overtime thriller Sunday at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to advance to the North division semi-finals of the 2013 Robertson Cup Playoffs.
The Tomahawks struck first when Brandon Reinholz scored less than five minutes into the first period. Mitch Maloney evened the score with his second-period goal, but Johnstown would regain the lead with a Cody Gylling score late in the second.
Johnstown took a two-goal lead near the midway point of the third period on Mitch Kontny's score, but Port Huron stormed back. Captain Rick DeRosa netted his second goal of the playoffs on a five-on-three power play with seven minutes to play to bring the Fighting Falcons back within one.
With less than a minute to play and goalie Max Milosek pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Brett D'Andrea's goal stunned the crowd and sent the game to overtime. Ian Miller's goal at 3:28 of overtime gave the Fighting Falcons the series win in a game they never held a lead.
Milosek earned the win for Port Huron, turning away 26 shots, while Chris Truehl's 26 saves were not enough for Johnstown.
Dan Dupell, Ian Miller and Rick DeRosa tallied an assist apiece for the Fighting Falcons, and Connor Wright, Mitch Hall and Andrew McDonald had helpers for the Tomahawks.
The win sends the Fighting Falcons to the North division semi-finals for a best-of-five series with the first-seeded Soo Eagles. The series begins on the road this weekend with games at the Soo Friday and Saturday.
The Fighting Falcons will host game three at McMorran Arena Thursday, April 18, and would host game four the following night if necessary. If necessary, a series finale would take place Monday, April 22 at the Soo.
Tickets are available now at the McMorran Arena Box Office, with adult tickets just $8. Children 12 and under can get a free ticket with a paid adult to game three. Each child must have one paid adult to receive a free ticket. All fans can take advantage of the concession special of a hot dog and a small fountain drink for just $2.50.
Port Huron went 3-4-1 against the Soo in the regular season, but won the last two matchups of the regular season against the Eagles in mid-March.
In the other North division playoff matchup, the third-seed Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings swept the Springfield Jr. Blues with a pair of convincing home wins. The K-Wings will take on the second-seed Jamestown Ironmen in the other North division semi-final series.
