TONIGHT:
The Ontario Reign (11-7) and Allen Americans (11-6) take to the ice for the seventh and decisive match of the Western Conference Finals. This is the second Game 7 that Ontario has been forced to play this postseason, third all-time, and first on the road. The Reign are 1-1 lifetime in Game 7 situations. The winner of this series will face the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals (South Carolina and Toledo are tied 3-3) in the Kelly Cup Finals. This is the first time both teams have appeared in the Conference Finals in ECHL play; Allen previously won back-to-back President's Cups in the Central Hockey League before joining the ECHL for 2014-15. The Reign and Americans split the regular season series at 1-1-0-0.
MORE GAME 7 STATS:
Including both Conference Finals series, there have been 68 series in ECHL postseason history where a team held a 3-1 lead, and only 12 times has the series gone to seven games. In the previous 10 occasions, the team which trailed 3-1 has won four times. In addition to Cincinnati in the 2010 Conference Finals, the other three teams to rally from a 3-1 deficit are Mississippi over Richmond in the 1999 Kelly Cup Finals, Las Vegas over Idaho in the 2006 West Division Semifinals and Dayton over Cincinnati in the 2007 North Division Finals. The home team is 21-8 all-time in ECHL Game 7's, and has won seven straight and 17 of the last 23. Five times a Game 7 has gone to overtime, with three of those being decided in double overtime. The home team has won four of the five Game 7s decided in overtime, including Toledo in the Division Semifinals.
SCORING FIRST WILL BE CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS:
Through the 2015 postseason, Ontario has scored first 10 times, going 8-2. Allen has historically started out slow in the first period, and as a result only has a 6-0 record when scoring first.
REIGN MUST CONTAIN COSTELLO:
A key to victory for Ontario will be to shut down Allen winger Chad Costello. The Americans are 3-0 in games in which Costello has found the back of the net in this series. So far in the Conference Finals, Costello has posted eight points (3g-5a).
NUNN MUST BE A PRESENCE FOR ONTARIO:
For the first time in the playoffs, Garry Nunn was limited to zero shots on goal in Game 6. The winger opened the series with goals in four straight games, but has since been limited to just one assist in the last contest.
