Player Spotlight: Ryan Lee
Denver Outlaws attackman and 2020 Powell Offensive Player of the Year Ryan Lee scored a league-high 18 goals during Major League Lacrosse's 20th Anniversary Season in July. Lee also put up two assists, 14 ground balls and averaged 4.0 points per game, another league-high.
Since the conclusion of the season, the Rochester Institute of Technology graduate has been working from home, as he has been since March, which has left Lee with a lot more time on his hands.
"My commute to the office before I started working from home was about three hours, so I have so much more free time now," Lee said. "If I want to get a workout in before or after work, I have so much more down time to do it."
Of those extra hours, Lee has devoted many of them to staying in shape in the off-season, despite the gyms in Canada remaining closed through the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Now that I have all this extra time, it's so much easier to find an hour or two hours to lift weights and get a workout in," said Lee. "I'm lucky enough to have a variety of weights with me, so that helps a lot. I bought a road bike at the beginning of the pandemic, so I've been cycling a lot; three or four times a week I'm getting out."
As for lacrosse, Lee, who also plays for the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League (NLL), has been itching to get back on the field with his teammates. Unfortunately, the Ontario native has been confined to wall ball and has been unable to compete.
"Everybody's in the same boat right now and we aren't getting all the lacrosse we need to complete against other people," Lee said. "But that will just make the training camps and pre-season next year more important for myself and the rest of the guys who are in the same spot as me and can't play against other people right now. I have to keep staying in shape and getting the stick in my hand whenever I can before next year's season."
When he does not have his stick in his hand, Lee looks for ways to relax outside of his sport, but not necessarily outside of sports all together.
"I was keeping up with the NHL season late at night, and I've been pretty into the NFL," said Lee. "I'm a big Chiefs fan. My Sundays are mostly sitting on the couch and watching football. I've also been reading a bit over the pandemic to keep myself occupied and busy as much as I can with different things."
