Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies sold rookie outfielder Tyler Plantier's contract to the Colorado Rockies this week following the completion of the Grizzlies' four-game series against the Florence Freedom.

Plantier is the first Grizzlie to sign with an MLB organization in 2019 and the 46th in the franchise's 19-year history. Trevor Richards, who is now in his second season as a starting pitcher with the Miami Marlins, became the second former Grizzlie to reach the major leagues when he debuted for Miami last April.

"We are excited for Tyler and his new opporunity," Grizzlies manager Phil Warren said. "He's certainly worthy of it and his short time here proved that. His signing with the Rockies truly exemplifies the platform the Frontier League provides for players to prove they can play at the professional level while enjoying consistent MLB exposure. We wish him the best and look forward to watching his career unfold in the Rockies' farm system."

Plantier hit in each of his first four games as a professional and finished his brief Grizzlies tenure 7-for-16 (.438) with a home run and six RBIs. The former First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection finished his collegiate career at the University of Richmond this spring. Before his two years with the Spiders, he played two seasons at UC-San Diego.

As a fifth-year senior pursuing his master's degree, Plantier hit .339 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs in 46 games. After finishing the season with a 1.016 OPS, he signed with the Grizzlies last Thursday (June 20). He was also a Northwoods League All-Star in 2018 with the Madison Mallards, for whom he batted .313 with 14 home runs, 51 RBIs, and a .950 OPS over 65 games in the prestigious summer league.

The Poway, Calif., native graduated from UC-San Diego in three years with his bachelor's degree in economics and completed a master's degree in human resource management in his two years at Richmond.
