Playing their first game against an opponent in 2011 the Calgary Vipers tied the extended spring training San Francisco Giants 4-4 at the San Francisco Giants Minor League Complex in Scottsdale, Arizona. After five innings of a pitcher's duel Calgary scored three runs in the sixth but also gave up three runs in the seventh resulting in the saw off.
On the mound Dusty Gober got the start for Calgary and was great in striking out six batters in three scoreless innings. After allowing the first three runners he faced to reach Gober retired nine straight batters. J.J. Whetsel was also solid with a 96 miles per hour heater and four strikeouts in two frames, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's Dan Morari faced the minimum three batters in his scoreless inning of work, Julian Arballo recorded three strikeouts in two innings without giving up an earned run and Rob Naegele preserved the tie with a three up, three down ninth inning including two strikeouts.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of third inning when with two outs Louie Templeton walked, Jonny Kaplan doubled, and Wilver Perez drove in one with a single for a 1-0 lead.
The Giants tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth frame as Miles Schroder singled, stole second base, and scored on a two out Mike Murray RBI single.
The Vipers regained the lead at 4-1 in the next half inning when Isidro Perez singled, Kaplan was hit by a pitch, Wilver Perez singled to load the bases, Jimmy Rohan singled in one run, a second run scored on a throw to third base, and after a passed ball Brian Rios collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Giants tied the game at 4-4 as Luis Munoz walked, Schroder singled, Cristian Paulino doubled in drive in one run, Danny Brock grounded out for a RBI, and with two outs Daniel Burkhart reached on a fielding error to allow another run to score.
The Vipers continue spring training against the Edmonton Capitals on Wednesday May 18th at 12:00 PM MDT, the extended spring training Cincinnati Reds team on Thursday May 19th at 11:30 AM MDT, the Capitals on Friday May 20th at 12:00 PM MDT, the extended spring training Seattle Mariners team on Saturday May 21st at 11:00 AM MDT, and again Edmonton on Sunday May 22nd at 12:00 PM MDT.
Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.
The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
