Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 9, 2016) - The Southern Illinois Miners got a quality start from Rick Teasley and perfect relief by the bullpen, plus clutch hitting in the middle frames to help them beat the Normal CornBelters on Tuesday night at Rent One Park by a score of 4-3. The win is the Miners' 49th of the season, clinching a tenth-straight winning season to extend their own Frontier League record.
In the bottom of the first, after Teasley (6-3) worked around two singles for a scoreless top half, Steve Marino's RBI infield single put Southern Illinois up 1-0, but that lead would be short-lived. In the second inning, four CornBelters hits scored two runs to give the visitors a 2-1 lead, with the go-ahead hit provided with two outs by Santiago Chirino.
But from that moment onward, Southern Illinois pitching was nearly perfect. The Miners would retire 22 of the final 23 batters that they faced as a pitching staff, and the offense backed them up by getting the lead back in the third inning when Marino broke his bat but kept the ball fair inside the right-field line, scoring Aaron Gates and Shane Kennedy for a 3-2 Miners lead. Normal would tie the game at 3-3 on Chirino's solo homer in the fifth (the lone baserunner in the last seven innings for the CornBelters), but Willi Martin's RBI double in the sixth inning off of Normal starter Charlie Gillies (4-2) would score Alex De Leon all the way from first base for what would eventually be the winning run at 4-3.
Teasley pitched six innings, allowing no walks with three strikeouts to earn the victory, while Chris DeBoo, Rich Mascheri and Adam Lopez retired all nine hitters they faced in the seventh, eighth and ninth, combining for four strikeouts with Lopez notching his ninth save of the season.
The Miners will look to take the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., sending Brooks Trujillo to the hill against the CornBelters' Michael Schweiss.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
