Pitching and Timely Hitting Leads Vermont Past Ocean State, 4-1

June 24, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, VT - Another stellar pitching performance from Indigo Diaz (North Vancouver, BC/ Michigan State) and some clutch hits lead Vermont past first place Ocean State Sunday night at Recreation Field.

The Mountaineers got off to a good start, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) led off the inning with a double. He then stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone).

Vermont would then add two more in the bottom of the third inning. Kelley led off the inning with a triple, and came around to score on a double from newcomer Austin Masel (Stoneham, MA/ Holy Cross), his first hit and RBI as a Mountaineer. He would come around to score on an RBI single from Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Eastern Michigan), pushing the Vermont lead to three.

Ocean State got one back in the fourth, but that was erased when Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) got a hold of one and hit his first homerun of the season, a solo shot that gave the Mountaineers a 4-1 lead.

That would be all the Vermont pitchers would need, as they shut out the potent Waves offense for the majority of the game. Diaz went six innings, giving up five hits, one run (unearned) while striking out seven. Ryan Leckich (Port Neches, TX/ Baylor) came in and recorded the last nine outs of the game, earning his first save of the year. The loss for Ocean State went to Jesse Slinger (Pittsburg, PA/ Lock Haven). He only lasted three innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

The Mountaineers (5-11) have a much needed day off Monday before starting another 6 game stretch Tuesday. The North Adams SteepleCats (4-11) come to Montpelier for the first time this season. Vermont sits seven games back of first place Valley (11-3). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 or on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
