Pirates' Podkonicky named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Portland Pirates left wing Andrej Podkonicky has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending April 11, 2004. Podkonicky scored four goals and added four assists for eight points and a plus-5 rating in four games as Portland secured a berth in the Calder Cup 2004 Playoffs.

Podkonicky assisted on Portland's lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Providence on Wednesday, then recorded what would be the Pirates' first and only hat trick of the season and added an assist in a 6-3 win over Lowell on Friday, clinching a postseason berth in the process. He set up two goals in a 3-2 win in the back end of the home-and-home with the Lock Monsters on Saturday, and scored the game-winner in Sunday's 3-2 victory over Springfield.

In recognition of his achievement, Podkonicky will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to Auburn Youth Hockey in Podkonicky's name.

Podkonicky finished the season with 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 56 games with Portland, and also skated in two NHL matches with Washington. The 25-year-old native of Zvolen, Slovakia, was originally drafted by St. Louis in 1996.

Other nominees for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany left wing Steve Kariya, Bridgeport goaltender Dieter Kochan, Cincinnati left wing Stanislav Chistov, Grand Rapids right wing Kevin Miller, Hamilton center Tomas Plekanec, Hartford goaltender Jason LaBarbera, Houston goaltender Frederic Cloutier, Manchester right wing Pavel Rosa, Rochester center Chris Taylor, Springfield goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier, St. John's center Kyle Wellwood and Utah defenseman Tim Wedderburn.
