Pirates Blast Monarchs In Fourth Straight Win

Portland, Maine - Jeff Cowan and Tyler Ennis each scored twice and Mark Mancari collected five assists as the Portland Pirates powered past the Manchester Monarchs 6-1 in an American Hockey League game played today in front of 4,814 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Mancari's five assists tied a Pirates franchise record for assists in a game. The feat had been accomplished three times previously, the last of which was by Andreas Salomonsson on December 7, 2002 at St. John's.

Brad Larsen and T.J. Brennan also scored for the Pirates, who received a 37-save performance from Jhonas Enroth on their way to a fourth straight victory. Portland is now 25-16-5-2 on the season.

Justin Azevedo registered the lone goal for the Monarchs, who are now 29-15-2-5 on the season.

Manchester opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the game as Azevedo struck early to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates netted the equalizer five minutes later as Cowan scored his first of the game. The opening period ended tied at one. Portland poured it on in the second with goals by Cowan, Ennis and Larsen to build a 4-1 advantage through two periods of play.

The Pirates out shot the Monarchs 44-38 in the game.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Mancari was the first, Cowan the second and Enroth the third.

The 11 a.m. start was part of Let's Go! Goes to a Pirates Game as the Pirates welcomed students from around the state to a special educational day of hockey full of fun and interactive learning activities that promote physical activity and healthy eating. A total of 23 Maine schools were represented with more than 3,500 students, administrators, teachers and chaperones taking part in this inaugural event. Through the use of an interactive workbook, in-game activities and educational messaging on the video scoreboard from members of the Pirates, students will learn about healthy lifestyles while enjoying exciting Pirates action. The Pirates head out onto the road for their next two games Friday in Providence against the Bruins and Saturday in Lowell against the Devils. Both games can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5 and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.

The Next Pirates home games take place February 12 and 13th at the Cumberland County Civic Center against the Syracuse Crunch and Adirondack Phantoms, respectively.
