Admirals Schedule Lightens This Week
February 2, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
OVERALL...The Admirals enter this week's action with a 27-17-1-5 record, good for 60 points and third place in the AHL's West Division. The Admirals trail Texas by three points in the standings and are a single point back of Rockford and ahead of Chicago. The Admirals, who have dropped three of their last four games, have a light week on the schedule front with just a pair of home contests that will conclude a season-long five-game homestand. This is the fewest amount of games the Ads have played in a week since the Christmas break. Milwaukee hosts Texas this evening and then finishes the week against Houston on Friday night at the BC.
TOPS AMONG ROOKIES...Admirals forward Colin Wilson was selected as Reebok AHL Rookie of the Month on Monday. Wilson entered January with just five points in his first 16 AHL games, but in 17 games in January he totaled seven goals and 13 assists and a +5 rating. Wilson had an assist in three straight games from Jan. 7-10, and then went off for five points (1g, 4a) in Milwaukee's 6-2 win at Manitoba on Jan. 16, at the time tying an AHL season high. Wilson wrapped up the month on a five-game scoring streak, including a goal and an assist on Jan. 31 vs. Hamilton. Nashville's number one pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Wilson currently sits with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 33 games with Milwaukee. He began the season with the Predators and notched two points in 10 games, including his first career NHL goal on Oct. 21 at Boston.
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN...The Admirals take to the ice tonight on Groundhog's Day, the 13th time in franchise history that the team has played on February 2. The team's record stands at 7-4-1 on Groundhog's Day, including a 4-3 mark on home ice. The last time the Admirals played on February 2 was back in 2008 when they traveled to Peoria and took a 7-3 decision over the Rivermen.
ROSTER MOVES...The Admirals have released forwards Oren Eizenman and James Sixsmith from their professional try-out contracts. Eizenman saw action in four games with the Admirals, recording an assist and posting a pair of penalty minutes. He has spent most of the season with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL where he has totaled 32 points (9g-23a) in 34 games. Sixsmith played in four games with Milwaukee this year and also recorded an assist. He has also played for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) and the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) this year.
HEATING UP...Admirals forward Hugh Jessiman posted a goal and an assist against Hamilton on Sunday, giving him points in eight of his last 11 games. He finished the month of January with 14 points, including a team leading seven goals. His January totals were the most points he has produced in a single month in his two years with the team. On the season, Jessiman is second on the Admirals roster with 13 goals and sixth on the team with 23 points. The New York native has compiled 50 points (33g-17a) in 113 games with Milwaukee over the last two years.
A LONG STRANGE TRIP...Sunday afternoon's loss to Hamilton concluded what can only be described as a dizzying month for the Admirals. Milwaukee played 17 games in January, their busiest month of the season and the second most contests that the team has played in one month in franchise history. The Ads accumulated a 9-7-0-1 record in January with a 6-3-0-1 record in ten road battles and a 3-4 mark on Bradley Center ice. Not including the four days off for the AHL's All-Star Break, the Admirals had just three days in the entire month where they weren't either traveling or playing a game. The schedule lightens considerably for the team in February, as they have just 11 games, eight of which are at home.
BIRTHDAY WISHES...The Admirals would like to extend a special birthday wish forward Triston Grant who turns 26 today. Grant has totaled 15 points on seven goals and eight assists to go along with a team-high 109 penalty minutes. He is on pace to set career highs in goals, assists, and points. The Neepawa, MB native shares his birthday with such luminaries as model Christie Brinkley, singer/song writer Graham Nash, comedian Les Dawson, actor Tom Smothers, and Charlie's Angel Farrah Fawcett.
WHO DOES #2 WORK FOR...Today (2/2) the Admirals pay tribute to the number 2 with #2 pencils for the first 1,500 fans and promotions and hijinks pertaining to the number 2. Plus, Mason Crosby, the state's most famous number 2, will sign autographs prior to the game. Famous numbers 2s in Admirals history include Kiril Safronov, James Sanford, Bubba Berenzweig, and Dan Hamhuis. Plus, don't forget Jordin Tootoo, who wore number 22 and also celebrated his birthday today.
OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB...For the third consecutive season Sportsradio 1250 WSSP will serve as the Admirals flagship station with Aaron Sims calling all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Monday from 6-7 pm on WSSP.
