Admirals Dim Stars 5-1
February 2, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI--Led by goaltender Chet Pickard's 27 saves, the Milwaukee Admirals dimmed the Texas Stars in a 5-1 decision Thursday night at the Bradley Center, beating the best defensive team in the league on the strength of three goals on the power play and ending Texas' current five-game winning streak.
Tonight's contest featured Milwaukee forward Colin Wilson at his best, posting a three point night with a goal and two assists. Wilson, who was named the Reebok AHL Rookie of the Month on Monday, now has a six game scoring streak to his credit.
After a scoreless first period, the Admirals were first to get on the scoreboard when defenseman Alex Sulzer lit the lamp on assists by Jon Blum and Wilson at 10:46 of the second. Sulzer converted on the power play beating Texas' Todd Ford stick side on a slap shot from the top of the far circle, giving the Ads the early 1-0 lead over the Stars.
Again Milwaukee capitalized on the power play as Wilson won the draw in the Texas zone, tipping the puck to Nick Spaling who was waiting in the slot. The Texas netminder was pulled out of position as Spaling stick handled around the crease, leaving the Admiral with an open net to add to Milwaukee's lead, now 2-0 with 6:01 left in the second.
Rounding out the scoring for the middle period was Milwaukee's Mike Santorelli, who notched his 16th marker of the season besting Ford stick side on an assist by Spaling to take the Admirals lead to three with 2:25 left in the period.
Texas managed their lone tally at 9:23 of the third period as Aaron Gagnon got one past Admirals goaltender Chet Pickard to pull the Stars within two of Milwaukee.
Minutes later Wilson got a power play marker of his own, his 11th of the season, with a wrister from just below the near dot to boost Milwaukee's lead to three with just under seven minutes left in the game.
The Stars' fate was sealed Triston Grant celebrated his 26th birthday with his eighth goal of the season with just over two minutes to play in the game. Grant grabbed the rebound of a Mark Santorelli shot from the right circle and was able to beat Ford for the Admirals final tally of the contest.
Ten different Admirals found their way on to the scoresheet, led by Wilson's three point night. Sulzer and Spaling each chipped in a goal and an assist. Pickard was steller in net for Milwaukee, making a number of timely stops early in the first period when the game was still tied.
The Admirals are back in action on Friday night when they finish up a five-game homestand by hosting the Houston Aeros at 7:00 pm at the Bradley Center. The first 3,500 fans will take home a goalie oven mitt, courtesy of Palermo's Pizza. Fans can order tickets by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
