Pioneers Trounce Allentown 9-1

Monday, June 17 Dunn Field, Elmira, NY -

The Pioneers reclaimed sole possession of 1st place in the South Division with a 9-1 blasting of the Ambassadors in front of 759 fans at Dunn Field on a chilly Monday night.

Following a 50 minute rain-delay, Elmira put the game away in the early going with 3 runs each in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. 8 of 9 Pioneer starters scored at least 1 run and the one who didn't score, Norm Hutchins, drove in a pair with a double in the 3rd inning.

Elmira equaled a season high with 16 base-hits, 12 of which were singles.

The win puts Elmira (14-10) back atop the top of the division by a 1/2 game over the New Jersey Jackals who were idle. Allentown had won 4 straight and 6 of their last 7 heading into the series.

The bottom 3 batters, Brian Jones, Sandy Vasquez and Bobby Hill, went a combined 6-for-12 on the night with each going 2-for-4. Vasquez had a pair of doubles.

Sean Brummet (3-1) fired 7 innings allwing 1 unearned run for his 2nd consecutive solid start. Brummet went 8 innings of shutout ball in his previous start last Wednesday at Albany-Colonie.

Donnie Thomas and Julio Perez each worked an inning of shutout relief.

Game two of the 7 game homestand is Tuesday night at 7:05.
