Pioneers Top Final Coaches Poll
Published on July 25, 2007 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers maintained the No. 1 ranking in the final Weekly Coaches Poll for 2007, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. This marks the 14th consecutive week Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has claimed the pole position. The Pioneers collected 455 of a possible 464 points and 21-of-30 first place votes in securing the top spot. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to 14-1 with a 50-28 home win Saturday night against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. The Pioneers, who have clinched the No. 1 seed in the American Conference, finish out the regular season Friday night at Albany (5-10).
Rio Grande Valley (14-1, 430 points, 9 first place votes) held firm at No. 2 this week after securing a 73-68 home win against Lubbock. The Dorados, who have already clinched the Southwest Division, can also secure the No. 1 seed in the National Conference with a road win Saturday night at Texas. The Tulsa Talons (13-2, 378 points) stayed at No. 3 overall after a, 52-12, road win at Texas. Finishing out the Top-5 for the final week of 2007 are the Florida Firecats (11-4, 367 points) at No. 4 and the Spokane Shock (11-4, 324 points) at No. 5.
Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
