Pioneers Top Coaches Poll For Fifth Straight Week

May 23, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have maintained the No. 1 ranking of the Weekly Coaches Poll for the fifth straight week, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton collected 458 of a possible 464 points and 23-of-30 first place votes in securing the top position. The Pioneers, who are off to their best start in team history at 7-0, scored a 34-30 road win in Week 8 at Tennessee Valley.

The Tulsa Talons (7-0, 424 points, 7 first place votes) held firm at the No. 2 spot on the strength of a 53-38 road win Saturday at Amarillo. Rio Grande Valley (6-1, 369 points) and Bossier-Shreveport (6-1, 369 points) enter Week 9 tied at No. 3 overall. The Dorados won at Laredo, 48-21, while the Battle Wings defeated Manchester at home, 62-52, despite being without the services of QB Quincy Carter and DB Kendrick "Boss" Walker. Rounding out the Top-5 this week is South Georgia (5-2, 348 points). The Wildcats improved one spot from No. 6 to No. 5 after earning a 40-37 road win at Arkansas. The Twisters, who entered Week 8 at No. 3, slipped to No. 6.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll -results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
