Pioneers remain on top in week six coaches poll

May 3, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have maintained their No. 1 ranking in the Weekly Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. The Pioneers garnered 256 out of a possible 264 points and 19-of-23 first place votes in securing the top position. The Pioneers defeated the Manchester Wolves this past Saturday on the road, 62-47, to improve to 4-0.

The Memphis Xplorers (4-1, 225 points, 1 first place vote) moved up one spot this week from No. 3 to No. 2 on the strength of their recent home win against South Division rival Macon, 62-26. The expansion Spokane Shock also improved one position to No. 3 overall. The Shock (4-0, 211 points, 2 first place votes) are currently the only other team besides Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to enter Week 6 without a loss in 2006.

Rounding out the top five in this week's poll are the Florida Firecats (3-1, 160 points, 1 first place vote) and Arkansas Twisters (4-1, 154 points). The Week 6 schedule features three matchups of Top 12 teams. On Saturday night, No. 11 Manchester plays at No. 2 Memphis, No. 8 Tulsa plays at No. 6 Oklahoma City, and No. 7 Bakersfield plays at No. 3 Spokane.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 12 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
