Pioneers Bash Out 18 Hits in 8-3 Win at Quebec

Wednesday, August 21, 2002 - Le Stade Municipal, Quebec City, Quebec -

Elmira finished off a successful series at the Quebec Capitales as they equaled a season-high with 18 hits in topping Les Capitales 8-3 Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium in Quebec City in front of 4173 fans.

Rafael Alvarez hit his 11th HR of the year. His solo shot in the 4th started the scoring for the Pioneers. Brandon Pernell added 2-run HR in the 5th inning, his 7th with Elmira and his 9th overall this season.

Every Pioneer starter had at least 1 hit. brandon Pernell went 3-for-5 with a HR and 2 sb's as he extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the 3rd longest in the league this season.

Pedro Quero had a single, double and triple in going 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

Brian Jones was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI's.

Rolando Bello had a single to stretch his hitting streak to 8 games.

The victory ensures the Pioneers will stay on top in the wild-card race with 11 gaes to play. They entered action a 1/2 game ahead of Adirondack and 1 game up on Albany. Elmira has just 11 games remaining in the regula season.

Justin Stine (6-5) fired 8ip of 6-hit ball and held Quebec scoreless until back-to-back doubles in the 7th inning by Eric Kofler and Eddie Lantigua got them on the board. Donnie Thomas alowed a run in the 9th to close the scoring.

RH Joce Blais (2-2) took the loss for Quebec going 5ip, 8h, 4er, 0bb, 2k, 2hra.

Elmira scored 2 runs in the 4th beginning with an Alvarez solo HR over the scoreboard in right-cener. Quero doubled and scored on a single by brian Jones making it 2-0.

In the 5th, Bello singled and Brandon Pernell smashed a had-lined over the wall in LF to increase the margin to 4-0.

In the 6th Pedro Quero tripled to right-center and scored on a single by Brian Jones. Elmira had 4 straight hits in the inning but only scored the one run becaue Jones was caught-stealing and Rolando Bello bounced into an inning double-play.

In the 7th, Pernell singled up the middle, stole 2nd moved up on a groundout and scored on a michael Coleman infield single to give the Pioneers a 6-0 lead.

Quebec scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to close the deficit to 6-2.

Elmira would close the night with 2 runs in the 9th. Pernell singled and stole 2nd. Ron Bush doubled down the RF line to plate Pernell. Bush moved up on a groundot and, following a walk of Quero, was able to score on Brian Jones 3rd rbi single fo the game.

Eddie Lantigua and Rudy gomez hit back to back doubles in the bottom of thee 9th off Donnie Thomas to make it an 8-3 final score.

The Pioners host rival New Jersey in a 4-game homestand Thursday through Sunday at Dunn Field. Jackson Crowther (0-1 / 5-8) will pitch at Dunn Field as a Pioneer for the first tie in the series opener at 7:05. Crowther's last Dunn Field appearance came as a Berkshire Black Bear and the PIoneers lit him up in an 8-0 decision 7/23.
