Topeka Pilots News Release

After a hard-fought "W" in Friday night's matchup with the Springfield Jr. Blues, the Topeka Pilots could not replicate the result Saturday.

Topeka (7-4-0) had some quality chances in the contest and kept Jr. Blues goaltender Caleb Hannon busy, but they were stymied by Hannon all evening, falling 3-0 at the Nelson Center. 4

Springfield (4-2-1) broke through in the second period with all three of its goals, after neither team could convert in the first period.

Forward Max Brainin opened the scoring at 2:47 of the second, beating Pilots goaltender Sam Metcalf for a 1-0 lead.

Brainin doubled his scoring and the lead at 15:10 of the frame, beating Metcalf on a backhander from the slot. Topeka had a chance just seconds before the knot the game at one, but Hannon made a sprawling save to keep the puck out of the net.

Just before intermission, at 19:52, forward Ryan Reid fired a shot through a screen, sneaking past Metcalf's glove to make it 3-0 at second intermission.

Despite nine third period shots and holding a 34-25 shots advantage for the contest, Topeka could not come any closer in the final period.

With the series split, Topeka now will have an extra week of rest. The Pilots return to action at 7:05 p.m. October 19 at Landon Arena.
