Peninsula Pilots News Release
HAMPTON, Va.- The Peninsula Pilots held off the Morehead City Marlins 4-3 on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium. Peninsula (25-10, 6-3) ended the season series with the Marlins (17-16, 3-3) with a 3-1 advantage.
The Pilots continued their season-long trend by scoring first as they plated two runs in the first inning aided by four hits in the frame. Nick Walker (Old Dominion) reached on a leadoff double. After a ground out by Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) moved Walker to third, Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) benefited from a drawn in infield to score Walker on a perfectly place blooper to right. Darian Carpenter (VCU) followed with a single up the middle and Poduslenko showed his aggressive base running by moving to third on the play. A fielder's choice by Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) plated Poduslenko to put the Pilots ahead 2-0 after the first frame.
Morehead City answered with a run in the top of the second inning. Kyle Holbrook (Dartmouth) led off the second inning with a double. After a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by Dominick Cammarata (Tennessee) plated Holbrook for the Marlins.
Peninsula added another run in the fifth aided by heads up base running. Walker drew a one-out walk and swiped second. An errant throw on a Poduslenko ground ball allowed Walker to race from second to home to push the lead to 3-1.
The Marlins cut the deficit to one when Matthew Batten (Quinnipiac) doubled to lead off the sixth and came around to score on a RBI ground out by Christian Campbell (Rutgers).
Peninsula tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI ground out by Charlie Cody (Virginia).
Morehead City added a run in the eighth inning to pull within one.
Sam Sinnen (Old Dominion) picked up the win and moved to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander threw six innings while scattering six hits and giving up two runs and striking out five. Colt Harlow (James Madison) followed with two innings and gave up a run. Dillon Meadows (TCU) tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
The Pilots head to Edenton on Saturday night before returning home to face Wilson on Sunday for Hometown Heroes Night. For more information regarding the season, please visit www.peninsulapilots.com.
