Pilots Benefit from Miscues

PETERSBURG, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots took advantage of seven miscues by the Petersburg Generals to grab an 11-3 win on Monday night at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

While the Pilots tallied their highest total of hits of the season, they benefited from seven errors by the Generals to move to 4-1 on the season. The Generals fell to 1-4 on the season.

Peninsula started the scoring in the third inning when Will Shepherd (Liberty) singled to left with two outs to score Nick Walker (Old Dominion). The Generals responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Sammy Miller (Longwood) led off the inning followed by a walk to Wesley Drain (Sacred Heart). After a fielder's choice and a strikeout, Daniel Barnett (Grambling State) cashed in a two-run double to give the Generals a 2-1 lead.

Only mustering two hits in the first five innings against Generals' starter Nick Spadafino (Delaware), the Pilots had back-to-back hits by Shepherd and Darian Carpenter (VCU) to force Spadafino from the ballgame. Lefty Jeffery Whitner (Coker) came in relief and struck out the two left-handed batters he faced before being removed. With two outs and two in scoring position, Evan Fernandez (Jacksonville) singled to score Shepherd before an errant throw by the third baseman allowed Carpenter to score. A fielding error on the next play allowed Fernandez to score before a third error allowed Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) to score for a 5-2 Pilots advantage.

Peninsula added two more runs in the eighth thanks to another miscue by the Generals' infield. Augustine and Josh Close (Liberty) smacked back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After a double steal was successful, a misplayed ball on a batted ball by Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) allowed two runs to score. Later in the inning, another error allowed Sinnen to score to give the Pilots an 8-2 lead.

The Pilots added more runs in the ninth as four straight singles, with the latter by Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) driving in a run. Shepherd followed with a sacrifice fly to put the and Carpenter joined the action with a RBI single of his own.

Devin Mahoney earned the start for the Pilots and tossed four solid innings. The left-hander gave up two runs on five hits while striking out five. Caleb Evans (Liberty) tossed a scoreless fifth inning and was awarded the victory when the Pilots scored four in the sixth inning to retake the lead. Dillon Meadows (TCU) followed in relief with three scoreless frames with seven strikeouts before giving way to Alex Mauricio (Norfolk State) who pitched the final inning with a strikeout.

The Pilots kick off a stretch of six straight home games at War Memorial Stadium with a matchup on Tuesday night against Fayetteville for Poquoson Night.
