Pigs drop double-header heading into All-Star Break

(Allentown, Pa) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (42-44) dropped both games on Sunday afternoon to the Pawtucket Red Sox (35-52). Pawtucket won game one by a score of 5-3 and by a score of 5-4 in game two.

Game 1

The game was suspended on Saturday night after Pawtucket led 3-0 with one out in the top of the third inning. John Curtiss (0-1) made the spot start for the IronPigs. He allowed three runs off four hits in two innings while recording three strikeouts.

Bryce Brentz hit an RBI double with two outs in the top of the first inning and Cole Sturgeon blasted a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. Josh Martin recorded just one out in the top of the third inning before the game was suspended due to rain.

Tyler Thornburg started the game for Pawtucket and Erasmo Ramirez pitched the bottom of the second inning. Both pitchers logged just one inning before the game was called.

The game resumed with Tyler Viza taking the mound in the top of the third inning. He retired Chis Owings and Brentz before giving up a run in the top of the fourth inning. Juan Centeno hit an RBI single.

Lehigh Valley scored two runs against Josh Smith (3-2) in the bottom of the seventh inning as Rob Brantly hit an RBI single and Phil Gosselin walked with the bases loaded. Josh Ockimey homered off Viza in the top of the eighth inning to give Pawtucket a 5-2 lead.

Ali Castillo hit a sacrifice fly off Trevor Kelley in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the PawSox lead to 5-3. Kelley got Gosselin to ground into a double play to close out the game and earn his fifth save of the season.

Game 2

Sam Travis hit an RBI single off Jose Taveras (1-1) in the top of the first inning to give the PawSox a 1-0 lead over the IronPigs. Bryce Brentz hit an RBI double and Travis added an RBI single in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

Ali Castillo hit an RBI single off Kyle Hart (4-3) in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the PawSox lead to 3-1. Pawtucket answered with two runs off Connor Brogdon in the top of the sixth inning to re-extend their lead to 5-1.

Phil Gosselin hit a two-run home run off Mike Shawaryn in the bottom of the seventh inning to trim the PawSox lead to 5-3. Austin Listi added another run by hitting an RBI double off Domingo Tapia. Tapia earned his second save.

The IronPigs break for the All-Star Break and will return to game action on Thursday, July 11 in Rochester. The Pigs will play their next game at Coca-Cola Park on Tuesday, July 23 against the Toledo Mud Hens.
