Phoenix Rising Overcomes Two-Goal Deficit to Win 4-2 over Real Monarchs

May 25, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release

Phoenix Rising FC hadn't won at Real Monarchs since 2016 and went down two goals within the first half hour of the match, but the team overcame prior history and the deficit to win 4-2 and extend its winning streak to three matches.

Forward Junior Flemmings netted the game winner in the 60th minute of play. After a quick give and go with teammate Jose Aguinaga freed him into the box, Flemmings got off a quick right-footed shot just before the opposing keeper could set himself and he found the back of the net.

Prior to the Flemmings goal, Rising had a rollercoaster ride of a first half. Within the first 25 minutes, Real Monarchs' Marcelo Silva and Douglas Martinez each scored to put their team up 2-0. But Rising refused to go into the half trailing.

In the 30th minute, Aguinaga saved a ball from going out across the end line, then turned and slid a ball to an on-rushing Adam Jahn, who redirected the pass into the back of the net to make it 2-1. It was his sixth goal in five matches across all competitions.

Just four minutes later Rising FC equalized. Midfielder Jon Bakero raced upfield to apply pressure to the Real Monarchs goalkeeper forcing the goalkeeper to rush his kick resulting in the ball being kicked straight into Bakero, who threw himself into the kick. The ball bounced high into the air and back toward the net where it eventually bounced into the goal before the Monarchs goalkeeper could punch it away. The match would go into the half tied 2-2.

Captain Solomon Asante iced the match in the 81st minute, smashing a goal from distance to make it 4-2. The win is Rising FC's first in Utah since July 22, 2016, when the club was still Arizona United.

Phoenix Rising FC will be off next weekend, but the club returns to Casino Arizona FIeld on Friday, June 7, for $1 Beer Night against Tulsa Roughnecks. The team is 10-0-0 on $1 Beer Nights. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and the first 2,500 fans will receive a copper state t-shirt courtesy of Arizona Federal Credit Union. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at PHXRisingFC.com.
