Phoenix Mercury News Release
PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury selected Charisma Osborne and Jaz Shelley with the 25th and 29th (from Chicago) overall picks in the third round of the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Osborne, a 5-9 guard out of UCLA, was a four-time All-Pac-12 and two-time All-Pac-12 Defensive Team selection and finished her career as the second guard in Pac-12 Conference history to record 2,000-plus points and 800-plus rebounds (joining Sabrina Ionescu from the University of Oregon). A five-year starter (2019-24), Osborne averaged 14.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals for her career. During her graduate season, she was named a finalist for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award - presented to the nation's top shooting guard - and helped lead the Bruins to the Sweet 16 as a No. 2 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Osborne leaves UCLA as the program's all-time leader in game played and three-pointers made.
Shelley, a 6-3 guard, played three years at the University of Nebraska after transferring from the University of Oregon following her freshman year. The three-time All-Big Ten selection averaged 13.4 points, 5.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals during her senior season and earned a spot on the 2024 Big-Ten All-Tournament Team after setting Huskers' tournament records for points, assists and made threes. She finished her career fourth in Nebraska history in made threes and is the only player to have recorded two triple-doubles. An Australian native, she was the only college player on the Opals' 2021 FIBA Asia Cup bronze medal squad, was named to the preliminary roster for the 2020 Summer Olympics and won three FIBA gold medals at the junior level.
With the additions of Osborne and Shelley, the Mercury's training camp roster now stands at 15 players. A complete training camp roster will be sent out prior to the start of camp.
Phoenix will open the 2024 season against the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces on May 14 in a nationally televised matchup on ESPN2. The Mercury will tip off its home schedule on Saturday, May 18 against the Atlanta Dream for the Fry's Food Stores Home Opener. Tickets for select Mercury home games, including the only visit by the Indiana Fever and the 2024 No. 1 Pick Caitlin Clark on June 30, are on sale now at phoenixmercury.com/single-game-tickets.
