Philadelphia Soul Add Three Players Through Expansion Draft

October 8, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Philadelphia Soul News Release

The Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League has added three players to their roster today via the AFL Expansion Draft.

Defensive specialist Marvin Taylor was selected in the third round with the eighth overall selection of the draft from the Chicago Rush. Last season Taylor had a career high 52.0 tackles, nine pass breakups and three interceptions for 27 yards. At Florida A&M, Taylor was a three-year letterman at wide receiver and caught 63 passes for five touchdowns during his final two seasons.

In the fifth round, with the 13th overall selection, which was acquired in a trade with the New Orleans Voodoo for future consideration, the Soul selected offensive specialist Gunnard Twyner from the Columbus Destroyers (formerly Buffalo). Last season Twyner had 56 receptions for 864 yards and 16 touchdowns. A walk-on at Western Illinois, Twyner set a school record with 2,243 receiving yards.

With their final selection in the draft, the Soul picked up former Philadelphia Eagle TE Brandon Davis from the Los Angeles Avengers. Davis was released by the Eagles on 8/24/03 and brought to the Soul as a WR/DB. Davis never played football in college, but the former college basketball player was signed by the Cleveland Browns in 2002 and allocated to the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe.

"We're happy with the talent we were able to add to our team today," head coach Michael Trigg said. "We used some of our picks to secure Dwayne Missouri and Corey Mayfield earlier and having their veteran leadership will help us this season. With the players we selected today we've got a nice base of Arena players to build this team with."

The Soul traded their first round selection to the Colorado Crush for OL/DL Dwayne Missouri and their second, fourth and fifth round selection to the Grand Rapids Rampage for OL/DL Corey Mayfield.

The Philadelphia Soul will kick off their inaugural season this February. Season ticket plans are on sale now and can be purchased for as low as $80. For more information on season tickets call 1-888-PHIL-AFL.
