SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - For the Sioux Falls Pheasants, it was good pitching. For the Lincoln Saltdogs, it was missed opportunities.
The Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants beat the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday, 6-1, to win their second game in a row.
For the second night, the Pheasants had an effective pitching. Starter Chris Salberg (1-0) hurled five innings of one-run ball and allowed four hits while striking out five batters. The bullpen shut out the Saltdogs for the rest of the ball game and yielded four more hits.
The Saltdogs had plenty of opportunities to score but could not capitalize. In four different innings the leadoff hitter reached base but did not score. In the third inning, the Saltdogs loaded the bases with no outs but only scored one run on a sacrifice fly from Phil Hawke. Lincoln stranded eight runners overall.
Lincoln starter Chris Britton (0-1), a former major league pitcher, took the loss and allowed three runs on eight innings over six innings pitched.
The Pheasants scored two runs in the bottom of the first off a run-scoring single from Reggie Abercrombie and a sacrifice fly from Brandon Sing. Abercrombie finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
After hitting two grand slams in the eighth inning yesterday, the Pheasants once again provided fireworks in bottom of the eighth. Trevor Lawhorn and Eddy Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 6-1. Rodriguez has hit three home runs in the first two games of the season.
