Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- The Youngstown Phantoms won for the second straight night to send the Eastern Conference Finals back to Dubuque for a decisive Game 5 on Saturday night. The Phantoms scored two goals in the third period, including the winner from Austin Cangelosi, to earn a 4-2 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints Tuesday night at the Covelli Center. The Phantoms, who had outscored opponents all season long in the third period and playoffs, capitalized twice in the game's final frame and tied the series at two games apiece.
The Fighting Saints team depth was tested. Dubuque was without forwards John Stevens (upper body) and Peter Quenneville (lower body) who sustained injuries Monday night. Additionally, goaltender Arthur Brey became sick and was unable to start, pushing Christian Frey to start the game in goal.
Youngstown scored the lone goal of the first period. After a scramble in front of the goal, the puck popped back to the right point. Tommy Davis sent the puck across the blueline to Eric Sweetman who ripped a shot through traffic and past Frey to make it 1-0 Youngstown at 10:46.
Dubuque would respond with a pair of goals in the second period. Mike Szmatula got the equalizer for the Fighting Saints less than five minutes into the second period to make it 1-1. On the powerplay, Szmatula cut the puck off the right side half boards and wristed a shot that hit a defender in front and beat Youngstown goalie Sean Romeo upstairs and on the inside post at 4:53.
The Fighting Saints would take a temporary lead on a Seamus Malone goal thanks to a second effort on a three-on-one rush. Jeff Taylor charged the puck down the left wing and dished it to Joe Manno. The Fighting Saints forward gave it back to Taylor who fired a shot that Romeo denied. The netminder was unable to cover the rebound and Malone chipped the puck over him for his second goal of the playoffs at 9:10.
Youngtown would send the game to the second intermission tied thanks to John Padulo's fifth goal of the playoffs on the powerplay. A Sam Anas shot from the blueline was deflected in front and skittered past Frey to make it 2-2 at 14:01.
The Phantoms scored both goals in the third, with the game-winner coming from Austin Cangelosi on a one-timer from Cam Brown at 8:58. Brown got the puck in the corner and fed Cangelosi on the left wing who blasted a shot past Frey's blocker.
Padulo would add his second of the game at 18:57 into the empty net from his own zone to seal the deal.
The Phantoms outshot the Fighting Saints 22-20. Dubuque went 1-for-5 on the powerplay while Youngstown was 1-for-4.
Game 5 is Saturday night in Dubuque at the Mystique Community Ice Center at 7:05 p.m. The winner of the contest will be headed to the Clark Cup Final to play the winner of the Sioux Falls/Fargo series.
