NORFOLK - Jared Ross scored off a feed from Steve Downie with 15.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Philadelphia Phantoms a 5-4 win over the Norfolk Admirals at Norfolk Scope on Wednesday night. Downie's assist on the game-winner was his fourth of the night, and all were primary assists.

The Phantoms struck first, scoring with just over six minutes to play in the first period while on their third power play. Claude Giroux had the puck deep in the zone to the left of the Norfolk net when he tried to play a pass in front. The puck hit a defenseman's skate and slid past goaltender Karri Ramo for the 1-0 lead that stood at the first intermission.

The lead became 2-0 with 8:37 gone in the second period. Rob Bellamy tallied his second of the season when he took a pass from Downie on a 2-on-1 rush and finished it with a shot past Ramo.

Norfolk got one of the goals back in a shorthanded situation with 4:03 left to play in the frame. The Admirals had a 3-on-2 shorthanded rush where former Phantom Pete Zingoni took a drop pass and blasted a shot off Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe. The rebound went to a trailing Paul Szczechura, who beat Munroe with the second opportunity and made the score 2-1.

The Phantoms got the goal back just under three minutes later on Jonathon Kalinski's first as a pro. Kalinski was crashing from the right side when Downie found him with a pass from the left side down low. His one-timer beat Ramo and made it 3-1 at the second intermission.

But the Admirals roared out in the third period and scored two goals exactly two minutes apart to tie the game. The first came during a very short 5-on-3 when Jamie Heward's shot from the high slot was deflected past Munroe by Wyatt Smith 4:18 into the frame. The second came at 6:18 when Brandon Segal chopped a bouncing puck in front that Szczechura pushed in.

Philadelphia regained the lead with 4:23 to play in regulation. Kalinski took a blast from the right circle that was stopped by Ramo, but he got the puck back for a second blast from nearly the same spot. Ramo stopped that one as well, but the rebound went to the left and Jonathan Matsumoto was there to bury it and give the Phantoms a 4-3 lead.

But Norfolk tied it again on a late power play. With just 1:33 left, Juraj Simek took a feed from Andrew Hutchinson and tipped it past Munroe to knot the game at 4-4.

The goal set up Ross's heroics late in overtime. He came in with Downie on an odd-man rush and blasted Downie's setup past Ramo from between the circles.

Munroe stopped 31 of 35 in taking the win, while Ramo absorbed the loss with 28 saves on 33 Philadelphia bids. Norfolk outshot Philadelphia 35-33 on the game, including 17-5 in the third period, but the Phantoms outshot the Ads 9-1 in the decisive overtime period. Philadelphia was 2-for-8 on the power play, while Norfolk was 2-for-6.
