Phantoms' Renouf Receives USHL Honors for Second Time this Season

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Dan Renouf was a dominant force at both ends of the ice last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Monday, the United States Hockey League honored the second-year blue liner by naming him its CCM Defensive Player of the Week.

This is the second time this season that Renouf, 18, has received the League's weekly honor, and the fifth time Phantoms player has been singled out during 2012-13 campaign.

"Dan is extremely talented offensively, but I think what goes unnoticed is how good he is defensively as well," head coach Anthony Noreen said. "He can be used in any situation - the power play, penalty kill and in a shutdown role - and that's why he's one of the top defensemen in the league."

Renouf racked up two goals, two assists and four points along with a plus-3 rating as the Phantoms (11-14-0, 22 points) split a pair of road games against the Buccaneers. The Maine recruit opened the scoring Friday with an electrifying short-handed goal, poking the puck away on the blue line and than beating Des Moines goaltender Billy Christopoulos on the breakaway with a backhander. The goal snapped an eight-game scoring drought for Renouf, and held out to be the game-winner.

The Pickering, Ontario native notched his second of the night in the second period and finished with a game-high plus-4 rating as the Phantoms shut out the Bucs 5-0. Saturday night, the Renouf followed up his two-goal outburst with a pair of assists, but it was not enough as Des Moines got a late goal and hung on to win 4-3.

Through 18 games this season, Renouf has 5-3-8 and is tied for fourth in the USHL with a plus-17 rating. Even with the loss Saturday, Youngstown is 6-3-0 since he returned to the lineup on Nov. 17 after missing seven games with a broken wrist.

"There's no secret that we didn't have much success without him," Noreen said. "He's been a huge boost to our lineup since he came back and he's a huge part of what we're trying to do here."

The Phantoms return to action this week with a pair of games Friday and Saturday against Team USA. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. EST both nights at the Covelli Centre.
